  • Patent number: 7566507
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is provided with an hcp Co alloy magnetic layer with the crystallographic c-axes tilted at an angle from a substrate surface and fixed relative to a recording direction. The tilt is induced by epitaxial growth of the hcp Co alloy on an obliquely evaporated nonmagnetic polycrystalline underlayer, so that the magnetic recording medium exhibits thermal stability and improved overwrite with a single pole-type head.

  • Publication number: 20090078571
Abstract: The magnet assembly includes one rotatable dipole magnet subassembly, which is formed from a permanent magnet and a magnetically permeable convex end portion coupled to each of both ends of the permanent magnet, and at least two magnetically permeable flux guide subassemblies, which are configured so as to be magnetically coupled to the dipole magnet subassembly. The flux guide subassembly has a concave end portion that fits into the convex end portion. The flux guide assemblies guide a flux from the dipole magnet subassembly and generate a flux outside. The condition of fitting into the flux guide subassemblies is reversed by rotating the dipole magnet subassembly, whereby it is possible to easily reverse the direction of a magnetic field generated outside.

  • Publication number: 20070217074
Abstract: A perpendicular recording medium having a perpendicular magnetic recording layer and a magnetically soft underlayer structure disposed beneath the recording layer. The soft underlayer structure includes at least first and second soft magnetic layers having different magnetic permeabilities to create a magnetic permeability gradient in the soft underlayer structure. One or more of the soft magnetic layers can be anti-parallel coupled. The soft underlayer structure of the present invention having a magnetic permeability gradient advantageously leads to reduced adjacent track erasure (ATE) while maintaining good overwrite (OW) properties.

  • Patent number: 6773833
Abstract: A magnetic storage medium includes first and second magnetic layers provided on a support substrate such that the first and second magnetic layers have respective first and second magnetizations in an anti-parallel relationship in a state no substantial writing magnetic field is applied. The first and second magnetizations are changed to a parallel relationship when a writing magnetic field is applied to the magnetic storage medium, and the first and second magnetizations are changed to the anti-parallel relationship as a result of a magnetic reversal caused in the second magnetic layer with diminishing of the writing magnetic field. The reversal is caused as a result of the action of a reversing magnetic field that dominates before the writing magnetic field is diminished and becomes zero.
