    Abstract: Liquid argon, nitrogen or carbon dioxide is poured onto the surface of a bath of molten metal in a furnace.According to the invention, liquefied gas is discharged onto the surface in an amount which ranges from about 0.025 to 0.060 lb/cu. in. of metal in the furnace, while a skirt is preferably set around the open end of said furnace.Oxygen concentration above the bath remains lower than about 3.0%, while hydrogen and nitrogen pick up are reduced.

  • Method and apparatus for shielding a stream of liquid metal

    Abstract: A method for shielding a stream of liquid steel in an ingot mold as well as an installation to use this method. The shielding is done by means of a truncated cone placed around the pouring hole and converging towards the stream of metal, an injection nozzle opening out tangentially near the wide base of the truncated cone and projecting carbon dioxide snow and/or gas obtained by discharging liquid carbon dioxide around the pouring stream.
