  • Patent number: 10307930
Abstract: A guide bar for a saw chain includes an elongate, flat base body made of a basic material. The base body extends along a longitudinal center axis and, in order to guide a saw chain, has a running surface formed on an outer periphery thereof and a guide groove formed in the outer periphery of the base body. The guide groove has a groove base. A direction-reversing section for the saw chain is provided at one end of the base body. The direction-reversing section includes at least one add-on component having a running surface made of more wear-resistant material than the basic material of the base body. The add-on component is secured to the base body of the guide bar by at least one weld seam. The weld seam extends between the add-on component and the base body and is located spatially beneath the groove base.

  • Patent number: 9624993
Abstract: A hand-held work implement having a tool has a braking device for the tool that includes a brake band which wraps around a brake drum. The brake band and the brake drum undergo friction as they move relative to one another during braking. At least one of the band or drum comprises an austenitic steel, a duplex steel, super duplex steel, a nickel-base alloy or a cobalt-base alloy and has a base body and a marginal layer. The hardness of the marginal layer is approximately 150% to approximately 600% of the hardness of the base body and the carbide proportion in the marginal layer is less than approximately 0.5% by weight. A process for production of the foregoing includes diffusing carbon and/or nitrogen into a marginal layer at a temperature of less than 500° C.

  • Patent number: 9573294
Abstract: A chain for a work implement has lateral connecting members connected to central driving members via studs. The stud has two lateral portions spaced apart from one another by a collar. A driving member is mounted pivotably on the collar. At the collar the stud has a surface layer harder than the base material. For a high chain service life, the stud has a diffusion layer above a surface layer above the base material. To produce the stud, the stud is provided with a diffusion layer at least at the collar, and a surface region of the collar is hardened, such that a surface layer is formed between the diffusion layer and the base material of the stud. For a method for producing a driving member, the driving member is provided with a diffusion layer at least at a circumferential surface of a hole and the driving member is hardened.

  • Patent number: 5655304
Abstract: A guide bar for a motor chain saw has a guide bar member having a peripheral guide groove and peripheral shoulders for guiding a saw chain in the peripheral direction of the guide bar member. The drive members of the saw chain engage the guide groove and the lateral connecting members of the saw chain are guided on the shoulders. Wear protectors, made of a material that is more wear-resistant than the guide bar member, are provided. The wear protectors are connected to the peripheral shoulders so as to extend at least over a portion of the guide bar member in the peripheral direction. Each wear protector has a first wear surface facing the drive members of the saw chain and a second wear surface facing the lateral connecting members of the saw chain. At least one of the first and second wear surfaces of each wear protector has at least one peripheral recess extending in the peripheral direction.

  • Patent number: 5386756
Abstract: The invention relates to a saw chain for a motor-driven chain saw equipped with a guide bar and a drive motor for imparting a force to the saw chain for moving the latter around the guide bar in a predetermined running direction. The chain saw is further equipped with a device for supplying lubricating oil to the saw chain during the movement thereof. The saw chain includes a plurality of cutting links, a plurality of driving links and a plurality of side links all pivotally interconnected by rivets. Abrasive small particles become entrained in the lubricating oil which can lead to premature wear at the pivot locations. The saw chain of the invention includes a hold-back element in front of a rivet to hold back such particles and yet not affect the flow of lubricating oil to the pivot connection.

  • Patent number: 5249363
Abstract: The invention is directed to a guide bar for guiding the saw chain of a motor-driven chain saw. The guide bar of the invention has a lamellar configuration and is not made of three parts as are conventional guide bars. Instead, the guide bar of the invention is made of two side parts. The two side parts are connected by means of spacers which are configured as projections on at least one of the two side parts. The side parts can be frames having large inner openings and are preferably stiffened. The connected frames define a composite frame which can be filled with plastic. The spacers determine the spacing of the side parts and therefore the width of the guide groove for the saw chain. The invention is also directed to a method of making the guide bar.

  • Patent number: 4961263
Abstract: The invention relates to a guide bar having a main member made of solid material for a motor chain saw. The guide bar has two flat sides and narrow edges defining a saw chain path. A cutout extends through the main member of the guide bar for reducing weight. The openings in the main member defined by the cutout are closed by cover plates for maintaining the stiffness and are attached to the main member of the guide bar. A fill body is seated in the cutout with an approximately precise fit and is connected to the cover plates in a force-transmitting manner. In this way, a higher torsion stiffness is obtained while at the same time retaining the reduction in weight.

  • Patent number: 4903410
Abstract: A guide bar for a motor-driven chain saw is disclosed wherein the guide bar is provided with a center cutout extending in the longitudinal direction of the bar which is filled out with a bonded fiber material made of plastic and reinforced with long fibers. The guide bar reduces the weight and facilitates manipulation of the chain saw equipped therewith while at the same time providing a high strength and the capacity to take up bending and torsion loads.

  • Patent number: 4794696
Abstract: The guide bar for a motor-driven chain saw is provided for taking highest loading and is therefore made of solid material. For weight reduction, openings are provided in the guide bar which are closed off by cover plates that are flush with the flat sides of the guide bar. The cover plates are firmly joined to the base plate of the guide bar. By means of the hollow spaces inside the guide bar, a considerable weight reduction is attained, yet the stability of the guide bar is not substantially impaired as compared to a solid guide bar, since the hollow spaces are located in the zone that is neutral in terms of bending.

  • Patent number: 4768289
Abstract: A cobalt base alloy includes the alloy elements of nickel, chromium, tungsten, silicon and carbon with the nickel content being at least 25 percent by weight. The cobalt base alloy is applied as a coating material for guide bars of saw chains. The alloy has a high hardness with low brittleness by means of which an improved resistance to wear is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4693007
Abstract: A guide bar for a chain saw includes three layers. The two outer layers are defined by side plates which can be welded together by means of inserts and the intermediate member located therebetween is held in a form-tight manner by means of the inserts that are welded to the side plates. Because of this configuration, the intermediate member may be made of plastic or aluminum thereby reducing the weight of the chain saw. The guide bar with this sandwich configuration has excellent strength and has a weight less than conventional guide bars of comparable size.
