  • Patent number: 4771098
Abstract: Acrylic resin dispersions are prepared by a monomer addition process in the presence of a free-radical initiator and an emulsifier, wherein a portion of the emulsifier is dissolved in the initial aqueous phase and the remaining portion in the added monomer phase. The new process decreases the formation of coagulates, reduces the required amount of emulsifier, and allows the preparation of dispersions of resins incorporating a large proportion of units derived from water-soluble monomers, such as carboxylic acids.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 25, 1986
Date of Patent: September 13, 1988
    Assignee: Rohm GmbH Chemische Fabrik
Inventors: Werner Siol, Hubert Rauch, Norbert Sutterlin
  • Patent number: 4713434
Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of aqueous plastic dispersions which comprises emulsifying one or more free-radically polymerizable monomers in an aqueous phase in the presence of an emulsifying agent, in an agitator vessel; initiating the free-radical polymerization of said monomer or monomers in said aqueous phase; and passing said aqueous emulsion of the free-radically polymerizing monomer or monomers through a tubular reactor whose internal surface comprises an (optionally fluorinated)saturated polyolefin.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4373056
Abstract: An aqueous artificial resin dispersion, comprising an aqueous phase and a water-insoluble disperse phase formed from particles containing a copolymer formed in substantial part from a water insoluble or slightly soluble first monomer, wherein the copolymer additionally is formed from a second monomer of the formula ##STR1## wherein R represents hydrogen or methyl, R' represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1 to 12 C-atoms, R" represents an alkyl radical with 7 to 20 C-atoms, and M represents a proton, an alkali metal ion, or an ammonium ion, with the proviso that the aqueous phase is free of low molecular weight, ionic emulsifying agents. Such dispersions are particularly well suited for continuous emulsion polymerization because of the highly stable monomer emulsions formed by mixtures produced according to the invention.
