  • Patent number: 4180816
Abstract: A testing circuit for a radar-operated vehicle safety assurance system includes a test signal generator for generating an artificial intermediate frequency return signal. The radar system is switched on a manual command signal from the normal operating mode to an under-test mode to accept the artificial signal to determine the speed of the vehicle relative to a hypothetical target and the instantaneous value of the distance to the hypothetical target. The radar system includes a vehicle roadway speed sensor which normally supplies the system with the instantaneous speed value of the vehicle. When the system is switched to the under-test mode, a signal indicative of a predetermined vehicle road speed is applied to the radar to determine the safety distance to the hypothetical target. When the instantaneous value of the distance to the hypothetical target corresponds to the safety distance, an alarm signal is delivered from the radar system.

  • Patent number: 4148028
Abstract: A pair of antennas mounted on a vehicle receive an echo wave reflected from an obstacle to produce a pair of Doppler signals, the variation of the phase difference of which is used to indicate the direction of the relative movement of the obstacle. The phase difference also represents the difference in propagation lines and is proportional to the relative angular displacement of the obstacle so the rate of variation of relative angular displacement is detectable because the increase and decrease of phase difference negate each other.

  • Patent number: 4117483
Abstract: In a pulsed radar utilizing the phase shift of the intermediate frequency signal of a return echo with the speed of a moving object relative to a given point, a signal processing circuit includes a pair of comparators which respond to the intermediate frequency signal by generating first and second output signals when the input signal reaches positive and negative threshold levels, respectively. The comparator outputs are connected to a bistable device which periodically changes its binary state in response to the phase shift of the intermediate frequency signal. When the bistable device changes its state, the positive and negative threshold levels are varied in a manner to ensure that the bistable device retains its state even though noise is introduced into the intermediate frequency signal.
