    Abstract: In a fluid tensioner of the piston and cylinder type an annular element is provided either on the piston or on the wall of the cylinder. In the case of an annular element on the wall of the piston, the annular element has a coefficient of linear expansion greater than that of the wall of the cylinder. In the case of an annular element on the wall of the cylinder, the annular element has a coefficient of linear expansion less than that of the piston material. In both cases, the annular element provides compensation for changes in hydraulic fluid viscosity to maintain a constant leak-down rate, allows for flexibility in the choice of piston, rod and cylinder materials.

    Abstract: In a hydraulic tensioner, shock absorber or lash adjuster having a plunger in a cylinder filled with hydraulic fluid, and having a coiled compression spring acting on the plunger in a pressure chamber on one side of the plunger, air scavenging through the restricted space between the plunger and the cylinder wall is improved by providing radial grooves either on a face of the plunger contacted by the spring, or on the spring-contacting face of a plug which is located between the spring and the plunger. The radial grooves enable air to escape from the interior of the coil spring and move toward the cylinder wall. The grooves increase in depth proceeding from the interior of the spring toward the exterior thereof.

    Abstract: For division by a Mersenne number (2.sup.n -1), a divided P is expressed as: ##EQU1## A first summing unit sums up the coefficients a.sub.i 's to provide a sum of a carry multiplied by 2.sup.n and a sum portion less than 2.sup.n. The carry is added to the sum portion to provide a similar sum. When the sum portion of such a sum becomes less than 2.sup.n, the sum portion provides the remainder if it is less than the Mersenne number. If not, the remainder is rendered zero with an additional carry produced. A second summing unit calculates ##STR1## for i=1 to (k-2). Each summation is given by a carry multiplied by 2.sup.n plus a sum portion with the carry from the first summing unit and the additional carry added to the summation for i=1 and with the carry from the summation i=i-1 added to the summation for i=i. The sum portions calculated by the second summing unit with successive addition of the carries provide zeroth through (k-2)-th coefficients to (2.sup.n).sup.O through (2.sup.n).sup.

    Abstract: A toothed belt having an endless rubber band formed with projecting tooth portions, the rubber band having tension members buried in parallel therein. A cloth cover is fastened to the toothed surface of the band. The cloth is formed of woven fibers, and one of the warp and woof fibers of the cloth has a high-adhesive characteristic, and has a greater exposed surface area on one side of the cloth, which side is fastened to the toothed surface. The other of the warp and woof is formed of a fiber having properties suited for the working environment, such as properties of abrasion resistance and low friction, these latter fibers having a greater exposed area on the other side of the cloth, which other side is positioned for engagement with a toothed pulley.
