    Abstract: To discriminate a disk in a short time, a calculating part 16 measures an amplitude of one of a focus error signal and a tracking error signal, which are output from a differential signal generating part 15, several times, and outputs the measured amplitudes to a controller 20. The controller 20 compares the input amplitudes with threshold values stored in a memory 21, respectively, and determines whether or not an amplification gain of one of the focus error signal and the tracking error signal is changed. If it is determined that the amplification gain of one of the focus error signal and the tracking error signal is changed, the controller 20 changes the amplification gain of one of the focus error signal and the tracking error signal to an amplification gain represented by one of the threshold values and discriminates the kind of an optical disk based on the changed amplification gain.

    Abstract: The multimedia data decoder includes a decoding section and a control section. The decoding section for decoding coded data in a bit stream has a function to detect a synchronous word from the bit stream, analyze decoding information following the synchronous word and extract specific option designating information from the decoding information. The control section determines whether or not the option designating information extracted by the decoding section has any out-of-standard value, that is, any value that is not defined by a standard. If the option designating information has any out-of-standard data, the control section controls the decoding section so as to replace the out-of-standard value with a value defined by the standard and conduct a decoding process. For this purpose, the control section applies replacement information to the decoding section. Accordingly, decoded data is obtained even if the decoding information has an out-of-standard value.

    Abstract: When servo lock cannot be achieved because the number of disk revolutions cannot reach the vicinity of its regular number of disk revolutions, a table value is increased to prolong the disk acceleration time. In case of success in servo lock, the table value is reduced to shorten the disk acceleration time. Accordingly, it is possible to set the disk acceleration time optimized in accordance with a variation of torque in the disk motor. As a result, it is possible to save an unnecessary current which would be otherwise consumed till disk servo lock is achieved, so that it is possible to suppress the power consumption.
