  • Patent number: 9819129
Abstract: Described herein is an apparatus that includes a housing that defines an interior cavity. The housing also includes a feedthrough aperture. The apparatus also includes an electrical connector that is coupled to the housing over the feedthrough aperture. The electrical connector includes a base, a plurality of pins extending through the base, and a skirt positioned about a periphery of the base. The pins extend from a location external to the housing to a location within the interior cavity of the housing. Further, an inner surface of the base is co-planar with an outer end of the feedthrough aperture. • Patent number: 8749914
Abstract: A disk-enclosure base that is configured to inhibit formation of adherent solder-flux residue. The disk-enclosure base includes a casting, a through-hole fabricated in the casting, a solder channel, an E-coat layer, and an E-coat-free zone. The E-coat layer is applied to a first portion of an interior surface of the casting. The E-coat-free zone is adjacent to and surrounds the solder channel. The E-coat-free zone also includes a second portion of the interior surface of the casting lying between the solder channel and the E-coated first portion of the interior surface of the casting. The E-coat-free zone is configured to inhibit formation of adherent solder-flux residue. A disk-enclosure-base/electrical-feedthrough assembly that is configured to inhibit formation of adherent solder-flux residue, and a hard-disk drive (HDD) including the disk-enclosure-base/electrical-feedthrough assembly are also provided.

  • Patent number: 8659849
Abstract: A hermetically resealable hard-disk drive (HDD) configured for recharging with a low-density gas. The hermetically resealable HDD includes a disk enclosure (DE), a magnetic-recording disk, a head-slider, an actuator, a low-density gas, a through-hole, and a plug. The DE includes a base, and a first cover and a second cover joined to the base. The second cover is disposed above the first cover. The through-hole is configurable for injection of a low-density gas into the DE. The low-density gas, having a density less than air, substantially fills the DE. The plug is press-fitted into, and hermetically seals, the through-hole. The plug is removable to allow recharging the DE with the low-density gas; and, the through-hole is configured to accept a resealing plug to be press-fit into, and to reseal hermetically, the through-hole after recharging. A method for injecting low-density gas into, and sealing, the hermetically resealable HDD is also provided.

  • Patent number: 8094412
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate disk drives, and in particular to realizing a positioning accuracy equal to that of an actuator having the mountable maximum number of suspensions, in an actuator having the smaller number of suspensions than the mountable maximum number. An embodiment of a magnetic disk device includes an actuator having an arm to which a suspension for applying a predetermined load onto a slider with a magnetic head is attached, and an arm to which a plate is attached instead of having the suspension. The plate attached to the arm in place of the suspension has a partially small section with respect to a section perpendicular to an arm longitudinal direction (constricted part), and the constricted part is located between a plate leading end and an arm attachment part.

  • Patent number: 8064171
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to reduce out-of-plane excitation force exerted on a coil in a voice coil motor of a magnetic disk drive, so that vibration of a magnetic head is suppressed. According to one embodiment, a voice coil motor has a flat magnet that faces a coil, and generates a magnetic field, and yokes that apply the magnetic field generated by the magnet to the coil. The magnet is provided with a magnetic flux guiding section, absorbing leakage flux from the magnet, on a most distal end of the magnet as viewed from a pivot axis. A most distal part of the coil as viewed from the pivot axis, may be situated in an outer side with respect to the most distal end of the magnet, and the magnetic flux guiding section is provided between the most distal end of the magnet and the most distal part of the coil.
