  • Patent number: 11375746
Abstract: A smoking article includes a rod element of smokeable material connected to a filter element by a tipping wrapper. The filter element includes a liquid-filled directional capsule having a predefined rupture region at which the directional capsule is designed to break upon application of external force to release liquid contained therein. An indicator is provided at the tipping wrapper, or else is identifiable through the tipping wrapper, for encouraging a consumer to apply a crushing force in a particular location that can improve the user experience.

  • Patent number: 11116256
Abstract: An inhalation device controller includes a holder that holds an atomizer including a heater for atomizing an aerosol source, and a processor. Upon detecting an atomization request, the processor executes first determination processing of determining a remaining amount of the aerosol source in the atomizer using a first algorithm, and upon detecting an atomization request after the execution of the first determination processing, executes second determination processing of determining presence/absence of the aerosol source in the atomizer using a second algorithm. Even if it is determined by the first determination processing that the remaining amount is larger than 0, if aerosol source absence is determined by the second determination processing, the processor outputs the aerosol source absence as a final determination result, and inhibits a supply of power to the heater.

  • Publication number: 20200037659
Abstract: Improvements are provided in filters for use in smoking articles, including the use of randomly oriented discrete fibres. The improvements mainly relate to the loss of additive(s) in said filters and to the manufacture thereof. In one embodiment, a filter for a smoking article includes randomly oriented discrete fibres and at least one particulate additive, the at least one particulate additive being dispersed within the filter, wherein a value obtained by dividing a volume fraction of the at least one particulate additive by a volume fraction of the fibres is less than about 1100%.

  • Publication number: 20190230979
Abstract: A filter element for a smoking article has one end for connection to a rod element of smokeable material and an opposite end for insertion into a mouth of a user. The filter element includes: one or more filter segments provided on or arranged along a longitudinal axis of the filter element, at least one of the filter segments including a filter material; a wrapper which surrounds and wraps the one or more filter segments; and a liquid-filled breakable capsule arranged within one of the one or more filter segments, the capsule having a rupture point at which the capsule is designed to break or rupture upon application of external force to release liquid contained therein. The capsule is arranged in the one filter segment with the rupture point located at a first distance along the longitudinal axis from the one end of the filter element.

  • Publication number: 20190216128
Abstract: A method of manufacturing liquid-filled capsules for use in smoking articles includes providing a capsule shell defining a cavity and having an open end; dispensing a volume of liquid into the cavity through the open end of the shell, whereby a clearance is left between an upper surface of the liquid dispensed into the cavity and the open end of the shell and sealing the open end of the shell with a portion of sheet material to provide a liquid-filled capsule containing the volume of liquid. An apparatus for manufacturing liquid-filled capsules includes a holder for holding one or more capsule shells; a conveyor for moving or transporting the holder; a filling station for dispensing a liquid into a cavity of each of the capsule shells; and a sealing station for covering and sealing an open end of each capsule shell. A liquid-filled capsule is also provided.
