  • Patent number: 9835936
Abstract: An angle adjustment apparatus includes a holder including a first surface, a base member that includes a second surface, and a driver driving the holder. At least one surface of the first and second surfaces includes a curved shape. The first surface slides around a plurality of axes passing through a center of curvature of the curved shape to the second surface according to a position where the driving force is applied to the holder. Sliding the first surface on the second surface allows the holder to tilt to the base member. The driver applies driving force to a surface of the holder perpendicular to a first direction when driving the holder in the first direction, and applies driving force to a surface of the holder perpendicular to a second direction orthogonal to the first direction when driving the holder in the second direction.

  • Patent number: 6893305
Abstract: A marine propulsion unit has a driveshaft and propulsion shaft driven by the driveshaft and driving a propeller. The driveshaft carries a pinion. The propulsion shaft carries forward and reverse gears. The pinion meshes with the forward and reverse gears. The pinion drives the forward and reverse gears in opposite directions relative to each other. A sleeve is rotatable with the propulsion shaft. The sleeve is slidably disposed between the forward and reverse gears on the propulsion shaft. The forward and reverse gears have teeth on a surface thereof that opposes the sleeve. The sleeve has recesses on each surface thereof that opposes the forward or reverse gear. Each tooth can enter a corresponding recess. The tooth has a length substantially the same as a length of the recess in a circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 6283807
Abstract: A marine outboard drive, such as an outboard motor, includes both a splash plate and an anti-splash device. The anti-splash device includes a second splash plate that is provided on a lower mount, which couples together a swivel bracket and a drive housing. The second splash plate extends generally forwardly of the swivel bracket just under a lower portion of a clamp bracket that supports the swivel bracket. The anti-splash device preferably also includes a guide that is provided above the conventional splash plate for directing splashed water rearwardly so that the water is guided away from a mount cover that covers the lower mount. These features of the anti-splash device are particularly useful when the outboard drive is used with a pontoon boat.

  • Patent number: 6217400
Abstract: An improved control mechanism for a marine transmission that provides an effective shift control by forming a crank arm at the lower end of the shift rod which lies below a cylindrical bearing portion. These parts are passed through a key hole shaped opening in the lower unit so that when fully assembled, the bearing portion of the shift rod will be journaled in the cylindrical portion of the key hole shaped slot so as to provide a good bearing arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6200175
Abstract: An outboard motor mounting arrangement wherein the swivel bracket and clamping brackets have interengaging sliding surfaces that take side thrusts and minimize loading on the tilt pin during trim operation. In addition, certain electrical cables and hydraulic conduits are juxtaposed to the steering shaft and mounted so that they pass through the various brackets in a location close to the various pivotal axes to minimize flexure and reduce the necessary length therefor.

  • Patent number: 6192853
Abstract: An outboard motor oil pump driving arrangement wherein the oil pump is driven by a spline connection positioned between the engine crankshaft and the driveshaft. There is a spline connection also between the crankshaft and the driveshaft and this spline connection is spaced axially from the spline connection to the pump drive element with the splines being space from each other by a non-splined section so as to reduce stress risers and to make assembly and disassembly easy even if the parts are deformed.

  • Patent number: 6183320
Abstract: A tilt mechanism for a marine outboard drive includes a hydraulic cylinder assembly disposed transversely offset from the center axis of the tilt mechanism. The tilt mechanism includes a swivel bracket carrying a drive unit for pivotal movement about a generally vertically extending steering axis and a clamping bracket supporting the swivel bracket for pivotal movement about a generally horizontally extending tilt axis. The swivel bracket has wall portions transversely extending from the steering axis. One of the wall portions positioned nearer to the hydraulic cylinder assembly is reinforced greater than the other wall portion. Also, the clamping bracket comprises a pair of spaced members. One of the spaced members positioned nearer to the hydraulic cylinder assembly is reinforced greater than the other spaced member.

  • Patent number: 6146221
Abstract: An outboard motor has a steering lock which retains the rotational orientation of the outboard motor relative to a watercraft. The steering lock allows the motor to be pivoted about a substantially horizontal tilt and trim axis while the steering lock is engaged. The steering lock includes a friction plate which is advantageously straight. The friction plate is connected to the steering arm, and movement of either the steering arm or the friction plate requires movement of the other. At least one friction lock engages with the friction plate to secure the motor in a desired orientation. The friction lock is rigidly affixed to the outboard motor. The friction lock includes one or more disc pads. Movement of an operation lever urges the disc pads against the friction plate hold the friction plate and consequently, the steering arm, in a predetermined position.

  • Patent number: 6048236
Abstract: A marine outboard drive that is equipped with integrated splash plates and a baffle plate that prevent water splash-up along the drive shaft housing. The baffle plate protrudes from the drive shaft housing to interact with plates on the lower bracket to create a labyrinth effect. The labyrinth created by the splash and baffle plates impedes the path of any water impinging upon the lower bracket and the drive shaft housing. This minimizes the amount of water travelling up the drive shaft housing. A splash plate may also be included on the lower bracket to minimize water flow above the lower bracket.

  • Patent number: 5853307
Abstract: A simply-structured trim sensor measures the trim position of an outboard motor. The sensor operates between a pivot pin, which is fixed to a clamping bracket, and a swivel bracket, which rotates about the pivot pin. The sensor is arranged between the clamping and swivel brackets in a position which allows ready access to the sensor. A technician therefore can easily adjustment or repair the sensor without disassembling any portion of the clamping and swivel brackets, and without moving the outboard motor.
