Publication number: 20070244254Abstract: Low cost, highly weatherable thermoplastic vulcanizates comprising diene or diene/vinylaromatic, and preferably styrene-butadiene rubber, are taught. Weatherability; namely, UV resistance and color-fastness, is improved by the addition of carbon black. It is demonstrated that the addition of carbon black increases the UV resistance of SB rubber based TPVs to a level comparable to EPDM rubber based TPVs, while providing superior color fastness. As a result, lower cost SB rubber may be a preferable rubber for use in TPVs for exterior applications despite a lower inherent UV resistance.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Tonson Abraham, Norman Barber

Publication number: 20070244253Abstract: The compression set [(70° C., 22 hr), (100° C., 22 hr)] of TPVs can be improved by substituting, within their respective constituent plastic phase, all or portions of polyolefins having a high melting point, with polyolefins having lower melting point (Tm from between 115° C. to 140° C.). Exemplary polyolefins having melting points in this range include homopolyethylene, syndiotactic polypropylene, and isotactic poly(1-butene). Composition and methods of formulating thermoplastic vulcanizates to achieve an improved high temperature (between 70° C. 100° C.) compression set by selecting between suitable polyolefins on the basis of melting point temperature and substituting from 30% to 100% of high melting point polyolefins with low melting point polyolefins in the plastic phase are taught.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Tonson Abraham, Norman Barber

Patent number: 6814094Abstract: A rigid metal frame supports a fabric cover to provide a fabric-covered canopy. The frame has a series of the elongate rafters with free ends. Cables in the hem on the margin of the cover are used to apply tension to the cover to pull it taut and secure it to the frame. A tensioning apparatus on at least some of the free ends of the rafters hooks onto the cables and pulls them taut. A sleeve slidably mounted on the free end of the rafter carries the hook. A threaded rod accessible from the free end of the rafter is operatively connected to the sleeve so that rotation of the rod in a first direction applies tension to the cables and rotation in the opposite direction releases the tension. This enables the cover to be applied and removed easily. Vandal-resistant features prevent ready access to rotating the rod.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2003Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Shade Systems, Inc.Inventor: James Norman Barber
