  • Patent number: 9885718
Abstract: Cells within liver tumour mass comprise a unique set of proteins/tumour antigens when compared to the normal liver tissues epithelial cells juxtaposed to the tumour. The presence of tumour antigens couples the production of auto-antibodies against these tumour antigens. The present invention relates to the identification and elucidation of a protein set that can act as a novel marker set for liver cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Specifically, it relates to a kit that enables diagnostic and prognostic measurement of auto-antibodies in serum of liver cancer patients. The present invention provides a non-invasive, specific, sensitive, and cost effective detection and quantification method by evaluating a set of validated liver cancer proteins/tumour antigens, which includes Bmi-1, VCC1, SUMO-4, RhoA, TXN, ET-1, UBE2C, HDGF2, FGF21, LECT2, SOD1, STMN4, Midkine, IL-17A or IL26, to complement the conventional diagnostic methods.

  • Patent number: 9814759
Abstract: The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition containing recombinant hemoglobin protein or tetramer or dimer or subunit for tissue oxygenation and treating cancer. The recombinant hemoglobin protein or tetramer or dimer or subunit-based therapeutic agent is also effective for treating cancer. The recombinant hemoglobin or tetramer or dimer or its subunit moiety can target cancer cells and the therapeutic moiety (i.e. active agent/therapeutic drug) can kill the cancer cells efficiently. The recombinant hemoglobin or tetramer or dimer or its subunit-based therapeutic agent used in the present invention can be used in the treatment of various cancers such as pancreatic cancer, leukemia, head and neck cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer and brain cancer.

  • Patent number: 9803185
Abstract: The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition containing albumin-binding arginine deiminase (AAD) fusion protein for treating cancer or other arginine-dependent diseases. The AAD fusion protein can be purified from both soluble and insoluble fractions of crude proteins, binds to human serum albumin (HSA) or animal serum albumin and has its high activity with longer half life for efficient depletion of arginine in cancer cells. The specific activities of wild-type ADI and AAD fusion protein in the present invention are about 20 and about 19 U/mg (at physiological pH 7.4), respectively. The composition can be used alone or in combination with at least one chemotherapeutic agent to give a synergistic effect on cancer treatment and/or inhibiting metastasis. The AAD fusion protein can also be used as a component for detection and quantitative analysis of arginine in a testing kit for various samples including blood, food and analytical samples.

  • Patent number: 9056098
Abstract: The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition containing a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier for treating cancer, preventing recurrence and metastasis of cancerous tumor. The composition can be used alone or in combination with at least one chemotherapeutic agent such as 5FU, Bortezomib, doxorubicin, cisplatin, or any combination thereof. The hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier in the composition is capable of targeting a surface receptor expressed on cancerous cells and facilitating the uptake of both hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier and the chemotherapeutic agent by the cancerous cells via a receptor-mediated mechanism. The hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier inhibits the expression of hypoxic response elements such as HIF1 ?, VEGF, ET1, VHL, etc. The pharmaceutical composition of the present invention is also useful for inducing the apoptosis or cell death of a type of self-renewing and tumor-initiating cells called cancer stem cells which are located in the hypoxic niche of a cancerous tumor.
