  • Patent number: 6960028
Abstract: A ferrule for use in optical fiber connections has an optical fiber containing a bore extending therethrough. Within the bore is a member of shaped memory alloy (SMA) which clamps and affixes the fiber firmly in place within the ferrule without the necessity of cementing the fiber in place. The shaped memory alloy has two states: the initial or primary state and the secondary or deformed state. In the embodiments of the invention, the member is deformed from the initial state to the secondary state and the fiber is inserted in the ferrule. The member is then returned to the primary state in which it firmly clamps the fiber within the ferrule.

  • Patent number: 6932514
Abstract: A high density panel mounting assembly has a first connector housing having first and second arrays of channels for receiving modified connectors, separated by a shelf. An adapter assembly for receiving the ferrules of the connectors has an interior wall having first and second arrays of bored projections forming sleeves for receiving the connector ferrules. The adapter assembly has a second connector housing substantially identical with the first connector housing mounted to or integral with the rear of the adapter housing for receiving individual connectors. • Patent number: 6789954
Abstract: A pull-proof optical fiber connector for use with robust optical fiber has a housing and a ferrule bearing barrel member therein having a first outside diameter over a front portion thereof and a second, lesser outside diameter rearward portion, and a bore extending therethrough forming an optical fiber passage. The barrel member and, hence, the ferrule are rearwardly movable under axially pulling stress, and a stop member prevents further rearward movement prior to any disengagement of the ferrule with an associated ferrule or other apparatus. In one embodiment of the invention, the stop member is a fiber retention member having a front face and a bore extending therethrough of lesser diameter than the outside diameter of the second portion, thereby halting rearward movement when the end of the second portion butts against the front face of the cable retention member.

  • Patent number: 6744939
Abstract: An apparatus for tuning PM optical fiber connections has a first assembly including a light source which is connected to a first coupling stage having a rotatable polarizer, and a second assembly having a second coupling stage and a rotatable polarization analyzer for directing light transmitted through a terminated PM jumper cable coupled between the first and second coupling stages to a power meter. The output of the power meter is applied to a processing unit which, in turn, controls a rotation arrangement for the polarizing and analyzer. Crosstalk of this jumper is determined by ascertaining the angular positions of the maximum and minima outputs of the rotating analyzer, and the terminating connectors of the jumper are turned to the maximum value by aligning with a connector key.

  • Patent number: 6705765
Abstract: A connector plug for an optical fiber polarization maintaining connector has a front housing portion from which extends a cantilevered latching arm having a cross-sectional shape of a truncated wedge, and a rear housing portion. A barrel assembly having a flange thereon and a ferrule extending therefrom is housed within said first and second portions and is incrementally rotatable with respect to the first portion of the housing and hence to the latching arm. In a first embodiment the flange is seated in the front portion and prevented from turning with respect thereto. In a second embodiment the rear housing portion is an extender cap having resilient clamping arms which grip the flange. The extender cap is incrementally rotatable with respect to the first portion of the housing and, hence, the ferrule is incrementally rotatable with respect to the latching arm.

  • Patent number: 6698937
Abstract: The present invention relates to fiber optics. In this regard, embodiments of the invention may be construed as providing interconnection systems for optical media. An embodiment of the present invention includes an optical circuit pack assembly, an optical circuit board, a child board, an optical device having a front end and a back end, an optical connector, and an optical connector mechanism. As such, the optical device is mounted on the child board and the child board is in turn slidably affixed to the optical circuit board. The optical connector is mounted on the optical circuit pack assembly such that as an operator inserts the optical circuit board into the optical circuit pack assembly, the optical connector and optical device are obscured from view. Operation of the optical connector mechanism causes the child board to move along a longitudinal axis of the child board, thereby causing the optical connector and the optical device to become operably engaged.

  • Patent number: 6663293
Abstract: A tunable optical fiber connector has a barrel assembly within a housing in which a tubular member has mounted thereon a nut in a light press fit. The tubular member has a ferrule extending from the front thereof and, in a preferred embodiment, notches in its end for use with a tuning wrench. The outer dimensions of the nut are chosen to minimize float between the nut and the cavity that contains the nut within the housing. The connector is first roughly turned by rotation of the nut and tubular member together, and then precisely tuned by rotation of the tubular member relative to the nut.

  • Patent number: 6652155
Abstract: An optical fiber connector plug for insertion in an adapter wherein the connector plug has a conductive member on the latching arm forming latching shoulders for engaging the latch stops on the ends of latching ribs in the adapter and for activating a sensor mechanism such as spaced electrical contacts within the adapter. Leads from each of the contacts are connected to a central processing unit which detects the connection made and signals a switch to turn on the laser or other light source power. Thus, laser power is not turned on until the connector plug is completely seated within the adapter. Removal of the plug requires depression of the latching arm, thereby breaking the circuit and turning the laser off prior to the removal of the connector plug.

  • Patent number: 6619856
Abstract: An adapter for receiving a connector plug terminating an optical fiber has a body member having at least one opening therein having sidewalls for receiving the plug. The opening has a longitudinally extending channel for receiving the latching arm of the connector plug, the side walls of the channel being angled inwardly to create a channel cross-section in the shape of a truncated wedge. In one of the sidewalls of the plug, preferably an outer side wall, is a cantilevered spring member biased inwardly toward the interim of the adapter for maintaining pressure upon the side of a connector plug when inserted therein. The exterior of the adapter body member has a flange thereon for bearing against a panel member or the like, and a metallic member straddles the body member and ahs cantilever leaf springs forming locking members for bearing against the opposite side of the panel from the flange.

  • Patent number: 6609837
Abstract: An optical fiber adapter for coupling first and second dissimilar optical fiber connectors together without signal or coupling degradation has a body portion having a transverse wall. First and second latch gates form chambers for containing an alignment sleeve and one of the chambers has a spring member seated in a recess in the wall at one end of the chamber. The spring member exerts a spring force on the sleeve in opposition to the spring force of one of the connectors, so that the sum of the spring forces on the ferrules of the connectors is substantially zero, thereby insuring proper alignment and positioning of the ferrules.
