  • Patent number: 4273809
Abstract: Cast resin lenses which are removed from casting molds early in a cure cycle are coated for protection against exposure to oxygen to provide increased post cure surface polymerization and abrasion resistance.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 25, 1979
Date of Patent: June 16, 1981
    Assignee: American Optical Corporation
Inventors: Norman U. LaLiberte, Don H. Rotenberg
  • Patent number: 4238524
Abstract: A fade resistant, visually undetectable identification mark is imparted to an optically clear plastic lens or the like by providing a marking composition comprising a fluorescent dye and a liquid carrier material, and preferably including an inert sublimable solid diluent, applying the composition in a selected pattern on the surface of an article to be marked, removing the carrier material from the composition to leave a solid residue of the fluorescent dye and inert solid diluent, and permanently transferring the dye to a surface layer of the article as by heating. The mark enables a manufacturer to identify a particular article as its product by exposing it to ultraviolet radiation, yet the mark does not adversely affect the visible light optical properties of the article.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 6, 1978
Date of Patent: December 9, 1980
    Assignee: American Optical Corporation
Inventors: Norman U. LaLiberte, Don H. Rotenberg
  • Patent number: 4139694
Abstract: Composition of matter and process for imparting a colorless appearance to cast allyl diglycol carbonate articles such as lenses and lens blanks and for simultaneously imparting to the article an ability to fluoresce when subjected to ultraviolet light. The composition comprises about 40 parts maleic anhydride, maleic acid, copolymers of propylene glycol with maleic acid or maleic anhydride, or mixtures thereof, and between about 0.5 and 1.5 parts of a mixture of 10 parts cobalt acetyl acetonate and between about 0.4 parts to 1.2 parts copper acetyl acetonate. Between about 0.05 and 0.15 parts of the composition is mixed with 1600 parts allyl diglycol carbonate monomer-catalyst prepolymer mixture and cast to form the desired article.

  • Patent number: 4090830
Abstract: A mold for casting a polarizing ophthalmic lens from a fluid thermosetting monomeric resin wherein the mold unit includes convex and a concaved mold elements spaced apart by a peripheral gasket and includes therebetween a polarizing sheet defining first and second molding compartments thereabout such that the polarizing sheet while forming a part of the mold structure is cast in situ in the ophthalmic lens and becomes an integral part thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 19, 1976
Date of Patent: May 23, 1978
    Assignee: American Optical Corporation
    Inventor: Norman U. Laliberte
  • Patent number: 3970362
Abstract: A laminated optical element is produced by prepositioning a polarizing sheet, which has been coated on both sides with adhesive compatible with the encasing material, in a mold so as to accurately space the polarizing sheet from the inner mold surfaces, injecting a monomer of allyl diglycol carbonate into the mold so as to completely encase the polarizing sheet, and then curing the laminate. The process includes producing stress free castings capable of being subjected to subsequent color accepting treatment and various finishing processes. The laminated product provides a fully encased polarizing sheet with a thin layer of uniform thickness of the polymer on the front side of the polarizing sheet which may be readily finished for optical devices.
