  • Patent number: 8934192
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk comprising a plurality of tracks, wherein each track comprises a plurality of data sectors and a plurality of servo sectors, and each servo sector comprises a plurality of servo bursts. The disk drive further comprises a head actuated radially over the disk, wherein the head comprises a dynamic fly height (DFH) actuator. A gain control circuit is operable to generate a gain control signal for adjusting an amplitude of a read signal emanating from the head. Control circuitry selects an operating control signal applied to the DFH actuator by positioning the head over one of the tracks, and measuring an amplitude signal in response to the read signal. An amplitude variance signal is computed in response to the amplitude signal, and whether the head has contacted the disk is detected in response to the amplitude variance signal.

  • Patent number: 8773802
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk and a fly height actuator operable to control a fly height of the head in response to a fly height control signal. A touchdown operation is executed to set an operating fly height control signal by adjusting the fly height control signal until the head contacts the disk. A fly height calibration track is then read to set a fly height reference. When calibrating the operating fly height control signal, the fly height calibration track is read and the operating fly height control signal is adjusted in response to the fly height reference. When the adjusted operating fly height control signal is invalid, the touchdown operation is re-executed to reset the operating fly height control signal and then the fly height calibration track is read to reset the fly height reference.

  • Patent number: 8582231
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk. An analog touchdown (TD) signal is compared to a TD threshold in order to generate a calibrated TD threshold for a plurality of different dynamic fly height (DFH) settings. The calibrated TD thresholds and corresponding DFH settings are fitted to an estimated curve. At least one of the TD threshold and the DFH setting is adjusted, and a corresponding next point in the estimated curve is predicted. An actual next point corresponding to the adjustment is determined, and a prediction error is generated based on a difference between the predicted next point and the actual next point. A touchdown of the head on the disk is detected when the prediction error exceeds a prediction threshold.

  • Patent number: 6611396
Abstract: A method for assembling and operating a fixed media hard disk drive using a disk or a stack of disks on which servo information is pre-written off the drive spindle. The disks are subsequently mounted on the drive spindle and a set of rotationally concentric “virtual tracks” for seeking and following in terms of said pre-written servo tracks are defined. The use of the concentric virtual tracks assures minimal actuator motion during drive operation and increases acceptable offtrack tolerances. The off-spindle, pre-writing of the servo information increases the efficiency of the assembly operation and reduces the clean room burden.
