  • Patent number: 9131477
Abstract: A system and method for addressing RLC unrecoverable errors experienced by User Equipment (UE) in a wireless network help the network to resolve the errors without shifting the UE into an Idle mode and dropping voice calls. A measurement event provides the buffer occupancy and identifies the affected radio bearer to the network. If the state of the bearer is not changed, the UE provides a Signaling Connection Release Indication message or a Radio Bearer Release Indication message to the network, the latter message identifying the radio bearer to be released without taking down the entire signaling connection for the domain.

  • Patent number: 8744442
Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated methodology, for identifying to a circuit-switch-connected mobile station with an indication of packet-service capabilities available to a mobile station. A message generator at the network generates a message that includes an indication of the network-entity capabilities with respect to packet communications. A field of the message identifies the packet-service capabilities. A message is sent by the network and detected by a detector of the mobile station. A report is formed indicative of the value contained in the delivered message, and a user display displays an indication of the detected information.

  • Patent number: 8731552
Abstract: Network selection techniques for use in a mobile device which is configured for voice and packet data communications are described. The mobile device performs a scanning operation to identify one or more communication networks, and consults a network selection list for selecting, in accordance with assigned priorities of the list, one of the identified networks. The mobile device also determines whether a packet data service interconnection to a home network via the selected network is available. If the interconnection to the home network via the selected network is determined to be available, then the mobile device operates with voice and packet data services in the selected network. Otherwise, if the interconnection to the home network via the selected network is determined to be unavailable, then the mobile device repeats the acts of consulting and determining for the next identified network in the list.

  • Patent number: 8730921
Abstract: A method for implementing call re-establishment using a user equipment (UE) configured to communicate with a wireless communication network includes detecting at least one of a radio link failure and a protocol failure of a connection between the UE and a serving cell. A target cell of the wireless communication network is selected and a received signal level for the target cell is compared to a signal level threshold. When the received signal level for the target cell exceeds the signal level threshold, call re-establishment is initiated on the target cell. The signal level threshold may be encoded within a system information type 21bis message, or a system information element. In some cases, the signal level threshold is equal to a minimum signal level required on the target cell.

  • Patent number: 8516055
Abstract: A system and method for redirecting data from a host system (or messaging server) to one or more mobile data communication devices via a wireless packet data network is provided in which the wireless packet data network dynamically assigns addresses to the one or more mobile data communication devices on an as-needed basis. A redirector application operating at the host system is configured by each user to continuously redirect certain data to the wireless packet data network, as the data is received (or otherwise altered) at the host system. Two methods are provided for communicating the redirected data from the network to the mobile device. In a first method, the mobile device is configured to periodically contact a store-and-forward server within the wireless network, which, when contacted, assigns a network address to the mobile device and then transmits the stored, redirected data to the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8509779
Abstract: Methods are described for use in a mobile device such that when the mobile device is connected to a generic access network (GAN) cell, the mobile device receives information including characteristics pertaining to one or more neighbor cells in a network that are not GAN cells. The mobile device can then determine at least a list of candidate neighbor cells for handover from the GAN cell to a cell that is not a GAN cell as a function of the information. In some embodiments of the invention the network that is not a GAN is a UTRAN network and a candidate list of 3G cells are generated.

  • Patent number: 8509782
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to manage mobile handover are disclosed. An example mobile station includes hardware and software stored on a tangible computer readable medium that, during operation, cause the mobile station to receive from a network controller a response to a network registration request, wherein the response includes an indicator to indicate a type of cell that may be reported by the mobile station during a handover procedure and send a handover message indicating cells permitted by the indicator.

  • Patent number: 8483655
Abstract: Techniques for use in producing an incoming call message for a mobile-terminated call to a mobile communication device which operates in a wireless communication network are described. When the mobile-terminated call is a non-emergency call, data indications in one or more data fields of the incoming call message are set to instruct the mobile communication device to perform non-emergency call processing. When the mobile-terminated call is an emergency call from a public safety answering point entity, the data indications in the one or more data fields of the incoming call message are set to instruct the mobile communication device to automatically answer the emergency call. The incoming call message is sent to the mobile communication the wireless communication network.

  • Patent number: 8472955
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a technique for use in selecting a wireless communication network for a mobile station is described. The mobile station receives a plurality of Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC) pairs corresponding to a plurality of available wireless networks. The mobile station selects and registers with an available wireless network from the plurality of available wireless networks that corresponds to a home public land mobile network (HPLMN) of a HPLMN list which identifies a plurality of HPLMNs. If none of the available wireless networks correspond to an HPLMN of the HPLMN list, the mobile station selects and registers with an available network that corresponds to a preferred PLMN of a preferred PLMN list which identifies a plurality of preferred PLMNs.
