A first portion of the oxide layer between the silicon substrate and the first waveguide may have a thickness that is greater than a thickness of a second portion of the oxide layer that is between the second waveguide and the oxide layer. The silicon waveguide may be configured to receive, from an output end of the silicon nitride waveguide, the optical signal at an input end of the silicon waveguide and guide the optical signal along a second axis that is at a first angle to the first axis.     Abstract: An apparatus for cancellation of scattered light in lidar sensors is provided. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a lidar device with a transmitter configured to transmit optical signals and a receiver configured to receive return signals based on the optical signals. The receiver includes a first photodetector configured to receive a first return signal and a second return signal, and generate a first electrical current in response to the first return signal and the second return signal. The receiver further includes a second photodetector configured to receive the first return signal but not the second return signal, and generate a second electrical current in response to the first return signal. The receiver also includes an amplifier configured to receive a third electrical current equal to a difference between the first electrical current and the second electrical current.

    Abstract: Thermally compensated waveguides are disclosed herein. According to one aspect, the present disclosure proposes new ways to combine negative TOC (NTOC) material layers within the waveguides. NTOC materials can be implemented in one or more of a cladding layer, a core rib/channel waveguide, a horizontally segmented waveguide, a vertically segmented waveguide, a sub-wavelength grating structure, and/or in various other waveguide structure implementations including arbitrary core or cladding shapes. The integration of NTOC materials improves the temperature dependence of the waveguide spectrum. The need for fast and efficient optical-based technologies is increasing as Internet data traffic growth rate is overtaking voice traffic, pushing the need for optical communications.

    Abstract: Techniques for photonic demultiplexers are disclosed. In the illustrative embodiment, an output of an unbalanced interferometer formed from waveguides is positioned to the input of a slab grating, with several output waveguides collecting light in different wavelength ranges to create different channels for the demultiplexer system. In some embodiments, one or more auxiliary structures may be positioned near the input of the grating to change the structure of the spatial modes being provided as an input to the grating in order to alter the spectra of the output channels.
