  • Patent number: 11516030
Abstract: Power management techniques in distributed communication systems in which the power available at a remote unit (RU) is measured and compared to the power requirements of the RU. Voltage and current are measured for two dummy loads at the RU and these values are used to solve for the output voltage of the power supply and the resistance of the wires. From these values, a maximum power available may be calculated and compared to power requirements of the RU.

Date of Patent: November 29, 2022
    Assignee: Corning Optical Communications LLC

  • Patent number: 10820319
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to partitioning a time-division-based communications link for communicating multiple types of communications signals in a wireless distribution system (WDS). A WDS is configured to communicate multiple types of communications signals over a time-division-based communications link. For example, the WDS may be configured to communicate a digital baseband signal as a first type of communications signal and an Ethernet signal as a second type of communications signal. In this regard, a protocols division routing circuit(s) is provided in the WDS and configured to partition the time-division-based communications link between multiple types of communications signals based on a link configuration ratio.

  • Patent number: 10555312
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to allocating digital channels into spectrum chunks in a wireless distribution system (WDS). In a WDS, a central unit is configured to communicate downlink and uplink communications signals with a plurality of remote units over a plurality of downlink and uplink communication links. In one aspect, discrete downlink channels in the downlink communications signals are grouped into downlink spectrum chunks at the central unit when the processing circuitry at the central unit is underutilized. In another aspect, discrete uplink channels in the uplink communications signals are grouped into uplink spectrum chunks at the remote units when the processing circuitries at the remote units are underutilized. By grouping discrete downlink channels into downlink spectrum chunks and/or grouping uplink discrete channels into uplink spectrum chunks, it is possible to optimize system resource utilization in the WDS, thus providing enhanced overall performance in the WDS.

  • Patent number: 10405356
Abstract: Distribution of management services in distributed antenna systems having a central unit and remote units configured to time-division multiplex (TDM) downlink and/or uplink management signals into time slots to form a TDM management frame signal. In this manner, collision will not occur between multiple management signals communicated over a common communications medium at the same time in the distributed antenna system. Collision detection and management mechanism can add design complexity, cost by requiring additional components, and require additional area on electronic boards. The TDM management frame signal may also be modulated at a carrier frequency before being combined with RF communications signals so that the combined signals are within a linear range of shared certain communications components to reduce cost and area.

  • Patent number: 10291323
Abstract: Components, systems, and methods for determining efficiency of an optical signal source in distributed communication systems are disclosed. Environmentally induced variations in the performance of optical sources used to convert electrical signals to optical signals (such as laser diodes) at the transmitters within the system can be evaluated in real time. Steps can be taken to compensate for these variations. The efficiency of the laser diode can be measured and provided to receivers in the distributed communication system. The receiver may use information related to the slope efficiency measurement to adjust the gain of the receiving amplifiers to provide desired adjustments to the gain. Thus, the receivers in the remote units (RU) receive information about the slope efficiency of the laser diodes at the head end equipment (HEE) and the HEE receives information about the slope efficiency of the laser diodes at the RU.

  • Publication number: 20170208622
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to distributing digital communications signals in analog distributed antenna systems (DASs) using programmable head-end units. In one aspect, a programmable head-end unit is configured to convert downlink digital communications signals to downlink analog radio frequency (RF) communications signals for distribution to remote unit groups in the analog DAS. Further, the programmable head-end unit is configured to convert uplink analog RF communications signals to uplink digital communications signals to be distributed to the digital signal sources. The programmable head-end unit is also configured to route the digital communications signals between the digital signal sources and the remote unit groups based on programmably defined routing criteria, thus allowing the programmable head-end unit to be software-defined.
