    Abstract: A proxy MPOA client in a VLAN that is otherwise populated by legacy LECs such that the MPOA services for these LECs are provided centrally by the proxy MPC. A standard MPC enabled edge device is adapted to provide MPC services to legacy LECs that are not MPOA aware. Such an edge device provides MPOA services to legacy LECs located in other edge devices connected to the ATM cloud. The proxy MPC is configured to have at least two LECs: one residing on a legacy ELAN and another residing on an MPOA ELAN. Traffic from the legacy LEC arriving from the legacy ELAN is forwarded to an Ethernet port that is looped back to a second Ethernet port on the proxy MPC edge device. Upon ingress at the second Ethernet port, the traffic is treated as if it arrived from a regular port and provided with MPC services. The loopback may be implemented either internally or externally via one or more cables.

    Abstract: A method for adjusting an ATM switch local service policy based on a non-ATM protocol service parameter, the method including the steps of inspecting the payload of an ATM PDU received at a switch along at least one VCC to identify a non-ATM PDU protocol identifier included in the payload, inspecting the payload to identify a non-ATM PDU service identifier associated with the non-ATM PDU protocol identifier, and selectively adjusting a local service policy attribute within the switch for the at least one VCC based on the non-ATM PDU service identifier in accordance with an adjustment value previously associated with the non-ATM PDU protocol identifier and the non-ATM PDU service identifier.

    Abstract: A system for assigning wavelengths in an optical switch to enable unicast, broadcast and multicast traffic to be sent through the switch. The optical switch enables data to be switched in the optical domain as opposed to conventional switching in the electrical domain. This permits a very high data capacity and data rate using well-known WDM technology. Tunable transmitters are configured to connect each input port to a different output port within the switch. During each cycle of the switch the transmitters are programmed to a particular wavelength, the wavelength determining the destination output port. Interface (I/F) cards issue requests to send data to the switch and receive acknowledgements indicating permission to send data to a particular destination port. A controller processes the requests received from the I/F card to generate a set of acknowledgements. A two-way round robin technique is used to select the destination ports for each I/F card based on the requests received.
