    Abstract: The present invention relates to a halogen-free or substantially halogen-free flame-retardant composition comprising a blend of (i) at least one of each highly charring polymer (ii) at least one low volatility phosphate ester, and (iii) at least one compound which splits off a high volatility phosphorus-containing fragment. The invention also relates to a flame retarded thermoplastic composition wherein the flame retardant composition is blended with at least one thermoplastic resin (iv), preferable a polystyrene resin. The invention also relates to a process for manufacturing a flame retardant composition and a thermoplastic composition containing the same.

The invention also provides methods for reducing one or more side effects of administration of the pharmaceutical composition, methods for inhibiting microbial growth and oxidation in the pharmaceutical composition, and methods for enhancing transport and binding of a pharmaceutical agent to a cell.
