  • Patent number: 8689440
Abstract: A method of forming a hollow component with an internal structure from first and second panels includes the step of forming at least one protrusion on a surface of at least one of the first and second panels by a material deposition process. The first and second panels are assembled into a preform the panels being oriented such that each panel defines an interior and an exterior facing surface, with the at least one protrusion extending from an exterior facing surface of a panel. The preform is expanded against a die, such that the at least one protrusion is transferred from the exterior surface of a panel to the interior surface of a panel so as to define an internal structure. Forming the at least one protrusion may include encapsulating an elongate member on the surface of a panel by a material deposition process.

  • Patent number: 8579181
Abstract: A method of forming an internal structure in a hollow component that includes the steps of forming an assembly having first, second, and third plates the first and second plates each with a substantially planar surface and a surface that includes at least one protrusion and is on the exterior facing surfaces of the assembly. The third plate is sandwiched between the first and second plates. The method also includes the steps of selectively bonding portions of the third plate to sections of the first and second plates substantially opposite the at least one protrusions of the first and second plates; and forming the assembly against a die such that the at least one protrusions of the first and second plates are transferred from the exterior facing surfaces to the interior facing surfaces of the first and second plates.

  • Patent number: 8488888
Abstract: Systems and methods for estimating a posture of a body part of a user are disclosed. In one disclosed embodiment, an image is received from a sensor, where the image includes at least a portion of an image of the user including the body part. The skeleton information of the user is estimated from the image, a region of the image corresponding to the body part is identified at least partially based on the skeleton information, and a shape descriptor is extracted for the region and the shape descriptor is classified based on training data to estimate the posture of the body part.

  • Patent number: 8241004
Abstract: Within hollow structures, such as blade structures in a gas turbine engine, traditionally rigid girdered reinforcement has been utilised to define structure and shape. Such rigid definition can inhibit utilisation of damping fillers within the hollow structure. By providing a web former comprising spaced bond areas suspended upon angled interconnecting membranes a hollow structure is achieved which is flexible and can be used in conjunction with a damping filler to achieve desired performance. The web former supports skins defining the shape and takes some load such that the damping filler does not separate within the hollow structure.

  • Publication number: 20100239427
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a component by superplastic forming and diffusion bonding a first layer, a second layer, a first membrane, and a second membrane, the first and second membranes being disposed between the first and second layers with the first membrane adjacent the first layer and the second membrane adjacent the second layer, by a method of applying a stop-off material in a first predetermined pattern between the first layer and the first membrane so preventing a diffusion bond from forming between the first layer and the first membrane across regions defined by said first predetermined pattern; applying the stop-off material in a second predetermined pattern between the second layer and the second membrane preventing a diffusion bond from forming between the second layer and the second membrane across regions defined by said second predetermined pattern; and providing a damping material between the first and second membranes.

  • Publication number: 20100070435
Abstract: A computationally efficient method of performing probabilistic linear regression is described. In an embodiment, the method involves adding a white noise term to a weighted linear sum of basis functions and then normalizing the combination. This generates a linear model comprising a set of sparse, normalized basis functions and a modulated noise term. When using the linear model to perform linear regression, the modulated noise term increases the variance associated with output values which are distant from any data points.

  • Publication number: 20080242324
Abstract: Described is a technology directed towards providing a single page of data that when rendered (e.g., on a mobile device) displays combined content from multiple endpoints (e.g., corresponding to different messaging participants). Interaction with the page facilitates communication back to each endpoint. Bidirectional communication logic such as a messaging application provides the interactive page as a user interface. Content corresponding to each conversation is displayed in a separate area, which may include an interactive mechanism (e.g., a text input area and send mechanism) for sending a message to the messaging participant associated with that conversation. When content changes (e.g., following a page refresh), a change indication may be provided, such as by displaying a notification banner, and/or by changing the appearance (e.g., color) of changed message content.

  • Patent number: 6694166
Abstract: A magnetic resonance method is described for forming a fast dynamic image with an automatically generated grid of essentially orthogonally arranged grid lines by a saturation information induced over the object to be imaged. Therefore a first set of parallel saturation planes is obtained by applying a first nonselective RF pulse with a flip angle of 90°, an intermediate magnetic field gradient pulse in direction of the spatial modulation, and a second nonselective RF pulse with a flip angle of 90°. A subsequent spoiler gradient pulse is applied in the direction of the magnetic field gradient for slice selection. Subsequently a second set of parallel saturation planes is obtained in the same manner by inverting one second RF pulse with respect to the first RF pulse. Further the first and the sets of saturation planes are subtracted from each other to obtain a grid free of any contribution of relaxation components of magnetization.
