Abstract: A safety device for a motor vehicle with a front portion and at least two headlamps spaced apart from each other is described. The vehicle includes a front hood which, in an accident, is displaced from its closed initial position into a raised safety position in which a gap is formed between the front hood and the front portion. To increase pedestrian protection, in the regions of the headlamps the safety device includes at least one covering element which is movable between a retracted position and an extended position in which the gap is closed by the covering element.
