Publication number: 20230398728Abstract: The present invention relates to roll-to-roll surface patterning by imprint method. A film of liquid phase resist is coated on a running web and subsequently brought into contact with a rolling replication tool with patterned features on its outer surface. In a simultaneous step, resist is 5 cured typically by heat or UV-light and patterned features on the rolling replication tool are replicated into the resist film during the contact with the replication tool. A major deficiency of conventional roll-to-roll imprinting is the generation of defects in the patterns due to trapped air. To overcome this limitation, the present invention describes a method and 10 apparatus to perform roll-to-roll imprinting under reduced-pressure or vacuum conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 19, 2021Publication date: December 14, 2023Applicant: Teknologian tutkimuskeskus VTT OyInventors: Olli-Heikki HUTTUNEN, Jussi HILTUNEN, Jarno PETÄJÄ, Johanna HIITOLA-KEINÄNEN

Patent number: 9625717Abstract: The invention relates to optical devices comprising a transparent substrate and a first transparent grating layer on the substrate, the grating layer comprising periodically alternating zones having different refractive indices. According to the invention, the device comprises a second transparent grating layer located on top of the first grating layer and also comprising periodically alternating zones having different refractive indices so that the zones of the first grating layer having higher refractive index are at least partly aligned with the zones of the second grating layer having lower refractive index and vice versa, the second grating layer reducing the amount of light diffracted to non-zero transmission orders. The invention allows for reducing the so-called rainbow effect for example in head-up displays (HUDs).Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2013Date of Patent: April 18, 2017Assignee: DISPELIX OYInventors: Antti Sunnari, Olli-Heikki Huttunen, Juuso Olkkonen

Patent number: 8580065Abstract: Method of creating a copied fine structure producing a diffractive optical effect onto the target surface, includes using a transfer foil manufactured from thermoplastic, on the surface of which is first created an original fine structure producing a diffractive optical effect; placing the transfer foil on the target surface with the original fine structure is in contact with the target surface; heating the transfer foil to a temperature close to the glass transition temperature of the material of the transfer foil; simultaneously during the heating or immediately after the heating lightly pressing the transfer foil against the target surface, whereby material from the transfer foil adheres to the target surface; and removing the transfer foil from the target surface, whereby the adhered material makes up a copied fine structure, which is a mirror image of the original fine structure of the transfer foil.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2010Date of Patent: November 12, 2013Assignee: Valtion teknillinen tutkimuskeskusInventors: Olli-Heikki Huttunen, Johanna Hiitola-Keinänen

Publication number: 20130004684Abstract: The invention relates to the production of an optically detectable marking on a substrate. In the method, a substrate is taken, a printing ink containing a starch derivative in a solution form is printed on at least a selected first area and at least a selected second area is left unprinted, the printing ink is allowed to dry, in such a way that the starch derivative form a thermoplastic film in the said first area on the surface of the substrate, and an optically detectable marking is hot-pressed into the film. The invention also relates to a corresponding product. With the aid of the invention hot-pressable diffractive embossing is created at low temperatures, for example, on paper or board.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2011Publication date: January 3, 2013Applicant: TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTTInventors: Tomi Erho, Soili Peltonen, Jouko Virtanen, Olli-Heikki Huttunen
