  • Patent number: 5610526
Abstract: A contact hazard meter used to measure electromagnetic field induced currents which would flow through a human body to ground upon physical contact with an item carrying such field induced currents includes a conductive contact, a human equivalent circuit coupled to the conductive contact and an electronic circuit coupled to the human equivalent circuit for measuring and displaying a measurement of current flowing from the item and through the human equivalent circuit when the conductive contact is placed in physical contact with the item carrying the field induced currents. The human equivalent circuit approximates the impedance of the human body at varying frequencies. The contact hazard meter has a plurality of range settings, one setting providing the resultant current as a percentage of a safety guideline maximum permissible exposure value.

  • Patent number: 5453734
Abstract: A workstation mat used to monitor radio frequency, electromagnetic field induced currents flowing through the body of a person standing on the workstation mat. The workstation mat includes an upper and lower conductive plate residing in parallel planes. The upper plate is superposed in spaced apart relation over the lower plate. The mat also includes an electronic circuit coupled to the conductive plates. The electronic circuit senses the induced current flowing through a person's body and sounds an alarm to warn the worker when the induced body current meets or exceeds a predetermined current threshold. The threshold setting is variable and preset by the user. The workstation mat has a reset button switch mounted on one lateral side and contains connectors for a remote alarm and a remote reset switch.

  • Patent number: 5394164
Abstract: An antenna for use in measuring current induced in a human body from exposure to radio frequency, electromagnetic fields approximates the impedance the human body over a wide frequency band of operation. The antenna includes an elongated resistive strip secured to a rigid supporting member, the supporting member and resistive strip being mounted on a supporting base plate. The antenna obviates the need for a human subject to be exposed to electromagnetic fields which need to be assessed to determine whether the induced current exceeds permissible guidelines. The antenna is collapsible so that it is easily transported to any desired location.

  • Patent number: 4672309
Abstract: A method and apparatus adapted to be worn by a person for measuring radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by a person's body in the frequency range of 10 KHz-42 MHz wherein the person's height is less than 1/4 of the free space wavelength of the radiation.

  • Patent number: 4403618
Abstract: Apparatus for electromagnetic radiation of living tissue, such as human tissue, or tissue simulating matter, comprises an electromagnetic radiation source having a dynamic frequency range of at least about 5 to 1, and preferably 10 to 1. Electrically connected to the source by a coaxial cable is a broadband applicator adapted for emitting electromagnetic radiation into tissue and the like. Parallel plate type radiation launching portions of the applicator are configured to have a characteristic impedance, throughout the dynamic frequency range, approximately equal to the impedance of specimens to be irradiated, which for human tissue, between 50 MHz - 2000 MHz, is approximately 50 ohms. A transition for interconnecting the coaxial cable to the parallel plate launching portion is configured to provide a relatively gradual coaxial to parallel plate transition at constant characteristic impedance throughout the dynamic frequency range.

  • Patent number: 4368472
Abstract: A method and apparatus adapted to be worn by the user for measuring radio frequency (RF) and microwave energy absorbed by a person's body in the frequency range in which substantial reflection by the body normally occurs. Included is a broad band body-mounted antenna responsive to the frequency range of interest, a detector, and integrator for providing a signal correlated to the energy absorbed during a predetermined interval by the body of the user on which the antenna is mounted. Also included is a radiation absorber located between the antenna and the user's body. The absorber provides at least 3db attenuation for incident energy in the frequency range of interest for minimizing energy reflected by the user's body toward the antenna. This, in turn, minimizes measurement errors due to location of the antenna in close proximity to the body which has substantial energy-reflecting properties at microwave frequencies of interest.
