  • Patent number: 9296432
Abstract: An aluminum alloy vehicle structural component defining an out-of-plane aperture with its main portion. A recessed portion is inset from the main portion having a bed sub-portion out-of-plane with the main portion that defines the aperture. The recessed portion also provides a strain hardened sub-portion, or stiffened ring of material, around the aperture. When the main portion is subjected to in-plane tension due to bending, the strain primarily concentrates along the strain hardened sub-portion (the stiffened ring) and by-passes the aperture. As a result the perimeter of the aperture undergoes less straining than if the aperture was in-plane with the main portion. The out-of-plane aperture, the bed sub-portion surrounding the aperture, and the strain hardened sub-portion surrounding the bed sub-portion may improve the overall structural robustness of the aluminum alloy structural component when subjected to in-plane tension.

  • Patent number: 9290142
Abstract: A pedestrian protection apparatus for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The apparatus includes a catcher beam and a catcher beam support assembly including a catcher beam support to which the beam is attached. The support is movable between stowed and deployed positions. The apparatus includes a bumper energy absorber and a bumper beam. The assembly is positioned adjacent the absorber and is either substantially within or adjacent to the bumper beam. The apparatus includes a mechanical, electromechanical or pneumatic actuator to allow the support to move to its deployed position. A pedestrian impact sensor sends a signal to a control unit in the event of an imminent pedestrian impact. The control unit then signals the assembly to allow the catcher beam to move to its deployed position using the actuator. In the event of a false positive deployment, the actuator retracts the catcher beam to its stowed position.

  • Publication number: 20160031401
Abstract: Described herein is a rear seat airbag deployment system, a rear seat airbag of the rear seat airbag deployment system, and a method of deploying the rear seat airbag. The rear seat airbag is configured in a substantially ‘U’ shape to encompass both the front and rear sides of rear seat occupants when the rear seat airbag is deployed. It follows that the rear seat airbag provides a safety cage that surrounds rear seat passengers upon deployment. Exemplary embodiments may further include an airbag deployment tool for gathering vehicle state information, analyzing the vehicle state information, determining whether to deploy one or more airbags, and controlling the deployment of the rear seat airbag.

  • Publication number: 20160023637
Abstract: A window wiper system is provided for enhanced performance in winter weather conditions. The wiper system includes a wiper assembly having a wiper base, a wiper arm pivotally connected to the wiper base and wiper blade carried on the wiper arm. An actuator carried on the wiper assembly selectively displaces the wiper arm between an operating position wherein the wiper blade engages and sweeps the vehicle window and a raised position wherein the wiper blade is lifted from the vehicle window. When the wiper blade is displaced from the raised position to the operating position it impacts the window with sufficient force to remove any accumulated ice from the wiper assembly without damaging the assembly or the window.

  • Patent number: 9233660
Abstract: A side impact system for a vehicle includes a trim panel and an armrest core supported by the trim panel. The armrest core is moveable translationally relative to the trim panel from a supporting position to a deployed position below the supporting position. An actuator is connected to the armrest core for moving the armrest core from the supporting position to the deployed position. In the supporting position, the armrest core may be adjacent a ribs of an occupant and, in the deployed position, the armrest core may be adjacent the hips of the occupant. The actuator may move the armrest core to the deployed position during a side impact of the vehicle to reduce the likelihood that the armrest core is pushed into the ribs of the occupant.
