  • Publication number: 20020147814
Abstract: An architecture and method of providing minimal functionality multimedia devices having the capability of communication across networks, which provides a simple and low-MIPS platform to build computer-based devices. Minimal function devices such as video displays, keyboards, microphones, speakers and mice are connected across the network and associated in various configurations as terminal devices to perform the desired function. Terminal devices communicate over an IP network with a terminal server. The terminal server performs the necessary computing and implements the necessary protocols for the terminal devices, while the terminal devices implement minimum communications protocols to communicate their data with the terminal server. When the terminal device is connected to the IP-based network, the device announces its availability to the network and is discovered by the appropriate computing device.

  • Publication number: 20020120760
Abstract: A transactional protocol enabling messaging, call functions, personalized communication policies, presence, and address book capabilities. The protocol is used between subscriber clients (windows specific or otherwise) and a server-based communication system. At the lowest level, the protocol uses HTTP as a transport, and a combination of a special URL format and content-information to describe intent and results. Alternate transports such as UDP, TCP, SSL, IPSEC, TLS can also be used. Transactions are taken from families of verb sets, each verb set built using a combination of generic verb headers and device/server/session specific tags. The protocol is transactional in nature and follows a pattern. That is to say that the client (in the client-server relationship, not necessarily a subscriber client) sends a request, and the server (again, not necessarily a subscriber server) replies.

  • Publication number: 20020024947
Abstract: Subscribers are able to selectively reveal their availability for communicating to various entities, based on the interaction of one or more customizable policies, preferences and active status of communicating devices. Availability status software comprising one or more agents determines and indicates the availability mode of specifically identified entities. Subscribers are able to establish a personal agent and control policies and preferences remotely using, for example, an internet connected computer-based device. Alternatively, service providers are able to modify the content of the agent of behalf of their subscribers in accordance with predetermined communication preferences (automatic or defined by subscribers).
