  • Patent number: 5009081
Abstract: A modular self-contained mechanical refrigeration unit adapted to form one wall of a refrigeration appliance is relatively thin and includes all of the electrical, mechanical and control components of the sealed refrigeration system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 1990
Date of Patent: April 23, 1991
    Assignee: Whirlpool Corporation

  • Patent number: 4996848
Abstract: There is disclosed herein a refrigerant container in the form of a bag, or pouch, made from two sheets of multi-layer barrier film material which are heat sealed adjacent their edges to form a closed pouch which has an interior space. The bag may be connected to an access valve provided in a line of a sealed refrigeration system for capturing the refrigerant therefrom. The barrier film material is specially formulated to prevent outward permeation of a refrigerant and to prevent inward permeation of air. A valve stem is provided for filling and emptying the bag.

  • Patent number: 4959111
Abstract: A self-contained thermal insulation panel, of generally flat rectangular form suitable for placement within the walls or doors of a refrigeration cabinet, consists of a hermetically sealed envelope surrounding an assembled framework defining a plurality of thin parallel internal cavities. The cavities are formed by a plurality of thin stretched-out sheets, each preferably with at least one reflective face, spaced-apart by thin interlocking peripheral gaskets between a top and a bottom frame member. A method of manufacturing an insulation panel according to this invention requries the initial assembly, on a first frame member, of an alternating array of thin sheets and gaskets, then a final sheet and a second frame member all brought firmly together and permanently affixed as a unified assembly. The assembled structure is then evacuated and refilled with a heavier-than-air gas of low thermal conductivity, e.g.

  • Patent number: 4705105
Abstract: A generally corrugated fin of a finned tube heat exchanger is formed to have a plurality of cylindrical collars that fit closely around tubes containing a first fluid, for good thermally conductive contact therewith. The collars are arrayed in rows along the corrugations and, within each local fin region between adjacent collars, cuts are provided parallel to and between adjacent crests and troughs, with a portion of each crest locally inverted to form a local trough and each trough inverted to form a local crest between successive cuts. A second fluid flowing outside the tubes between adjacent fins is thereby enabled to form numerous short boundary layers and to flow from one side of each fin to the other, thereby promoting turbulence and flow-mixing that enhance heat transfer between the two fluids.
