Publication number: 20220153252Abstract: A system may include a computer to obtain orientation information of a determined travel route for a vehicle system that includes a first power source and a second power source. The computer may determine one or more energy requirements of a hybrid propulsion system based on the orientation information. The computer may generate a trip plan to control a performance parameter(s) of a hybrid propulsion system and control a stable low temperature combustion. The computer may select at least one of the first power source or the second power source to deliver the one or more energy requirements. A method may include obtaining the orientation information, determining the one or more energy requirements, generating the trip plan, and selecting at least one of the first power source or the second power source. A vehicle system may include a hybrid power source, an electric motor(s), and a computer.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 7, 2022Publication date: May 19, 2022Inventors: Thomas M. Lavertu, Omowoleola C. Akinyemi

Publication number: 20200207378Abstract: A system and method for controlling a hybrid propulsion system. The system includes a computer programmed to obtain altitude and terrain information associated with a predetermined route for the hybrid propulsion system comprising a first energy source and a second energy source. The computer is also programmed to determine a power requirement and a torque requirement associated with the altitude and the terrain along the the predetermined route of the hybrid propulsion system, generate a trip plan to control at least one of a plurality of performance parameters and enable a stable low temperature combustion conditions in the hybrid propulsion system, as the hybrid propulsion system travels along the predetermined route. The computer is further programmed to preferentially select at least one of: the first energy source and the second energy source based on the trip plan to deliver at least one of: the power requirement and the torque requirement of the hybrid propulsion system.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2018Publication date: July 2, 2020Inventors: Thomas M. LAVERTU, Omowoleola C. Akinyemi

Publication number: 20040103860Abstract: A premixed charge compression ignition engine, and a control system, is provided which effectively initiates combustion by compression ignition and maintains stable combustion while achieving extremely low nitrous oxide emissions, good overall efficiency and acceptable combustion noise and cylinder pressures. The present engine and control system effectively controls the combustion history, that is, the time at which combustion occurs, the rate of combustion, the duration of combustion and/or the completeness of combustion, by controlling the operation of certain control variables providing temperature control, pressure control, control of the mixture's autoignition properties and equivalence ratio control. The combustion control system provides active feedback control of the combustion event and includes a sensor, e.g. pressure sensor, for detecting an engine operating condition indicative of the combustion history, e.g. the start of combustion, and generating an associated engine operating condition signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2003Publication date: June 3, 2004Applicant: Cummins Inc.Inventors: Axel O. zur Loye, Omowoleola C. Akinyemi, Russ P. Durrett, Patrick F. Flynn, Gary L. Hunter, Greg A. Moore, Jackie M. Mudd, George G. Muntean, Julie A. Wagner, John F. Wright
