  • Patent number: 4934562
Abstract: A waste container cover which can be vertically raised and lowered to open and close the container and rolled to either side from the open position. The cover has special tracks which ride on rollers to allow side to side movement of the cover. When the cover is above the opening, notches in the tracks are in registration with the rollers. A sliding plate in each track can be slid until inclined slots in the plate register with the notch and allow the cover to lower onto the container to tightly seal it closed. Crank and screw mechanisms operate the sliding plates. The cover can be tipped alongside either side of the container and is then supported in a vertical position by hook shaped levers which bear on pins on the container top.

  • Patent number: 4635979
Abstract: A latch for holding down the hinged hatch covers of railroad hopper cars. A hinge latch plate can be swung out of the way when not in use and is provided with a latch opening for receiving a tongue projecting from the hatch cover. A pivotal latch bar engages the tongue to hold it in the latch opening. The latch bar is shaped and mounted to provide an over center effect requiring it to be swung through a pivot arc greater than 90.degree. before it releases the hatch cover. A heavy duty form of the latch has double latch plates and double latch bars and includes a roller which facilitates the latching and release operations. The latch is useful to hold down the main hatch covers and also porthole hatch covers of the type found on sugar cars.

  • Patent number: 4378742
Abstract: An insert for a hold down bar which serves to hold down adjacent hatch covers of a railroad hopper car. The hold down bar includes an inverted channel, and the insert includes a rigid bar which carries a resilient gasket. The bar can be bolted in the channel with the gasket located to seal against the end of the hatch cover when the hold down bar is located down on the cover. The insert is used when an older hatch cover having a rain bar is replaced by a replacement cover that lacks a rain bar. The insert occupies half of the channel so that a second identical insert can be added if two adjacent hatch covers are replacement covers without rain bars.

  • Patent number: 4368674
Abstract: A hatch cover for railroad hopper cars and a method of constructing same. The hatch cover includes a main panel and a stepped periphery, both of which are constructed of polyester resin impregnated with glass fiber reinforcement. Stiffening ribs on the panel include a honeycomb core enclosed by a rigid shell formed by glass fiber reinforced resin. The entire periphery of the panel is strengthened by thickening it, and the areas to which the hinges are attached is thickened additionally. The hatch cover is constructed by applying an exterior protective coating to a mold surface, spraying resin and chopped glass fibers into the mold, inserting the honeycomb core portions of the ribs into the mold in a crossing pattern, and spraying additional resin and glass fibers onto the honeycomb to form the shell which encloses the core of each rib.
