  • Patent number: 5688368
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cooling wood pulp, coming from a high temperature bleaching stage at a consistency of approximately 10%, prior to introducing the wood pulp to a low temperature bleaching stage, including the steps of exposing the pulp to a thickening press in order to extract sufficient liquor from the pulp to increase the consistency to more than 25%; fluffing the pulp and depositing it on a moving bed cooler having a provision for blowing air through the pulp; and blowing cooling air through the pulp by using an air pump device with appropriate ducting. By first thickening the pulp, the mass of pulp to be cooled is significantly reduced and energy savings proportionate to the mass reduction are realized.

  • Patent number: 5470471
Abstract: An anti rewet deck is provided for press rolls used to increase consistency of fibrous pulp slurry from approximately 4 percent up to about 30 to 50 percent. This is accomplished by biasing the location of the drainage holes in the roll shell to the forward edge of the drainage compartments within the roll shell. To avoid the necessity for handing of the rolls, a mechanism is provided for accomplishing the purposes of minimizing rewet at practical production rates by providing baffle plates which effectively orient the draining pattern in the desired direction. Such baffles can be permanently or removably installed once the desired handing of the rolls is determined.

  • Patent number: 5046338
Abstract: Multiphase washing of pulp is accomplished on a fully pressurized drum filter by employing compaction baffles to increase the consistency of the pulp mat and by providing a separate pump for each wash zone so that there is no pressure difference between the wash zones and, thus, no need for any mat contacting mechanical seal. This avoids mat disruptions and machine clogging often caused by pulp pile-up at such seals. Feed pulp of relatively high consistency is made possible by incorporation of a deflocculator and distributor in the pulp feed nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4827741
Abstract: An air-tight vat under pressure completely encloses a rotatable drum. The vat is constructed so that it may be completely submerged in liquid. The vat has a liquid filled take-off chamber. The pulp is fed to the vat through a pulp inlet. The pulp is formed and compacted to form a pulp mat. Directly following the forming and compacting of the pulp is a washing zone for washing the pulp mat. After washing the pulp mat is again compacted. The pulp mat is removed from the drum at a removal point located in the liquid filled take-off chamber, thus providing a pulp suspension in the take-off chamber. The suspension is removed from the vat through a pulp outlet extending from the liquid filled take-off chamber.

  • Patent number: 4480392
Abstract: The dryer includes at least one vessel, means for heating the outside of the vessel to dry wet material in the vessel and a gas inlet in the lower section of the vessel. The pressure of the gas fed to the gas inlet is predetermined and transports the material through the vessel in the form of a loose material bed. The dried material is removed from the vessel.A high pressure gas pulse generator feeds pulses into the vessel to agitate the material in the loose bed to prevent compaction of the material, and avoid channeling through the loose material bed. The motion of the loose material destroys vapor film on the inside shell of the vessel to maintain good heat transfer through the shell.
