  • Patent number: 6743013
Abstract: An orthodontic appliance includes a base with an outer surface, as well as at least one passageway extending through the base. An element is received in each passageway and is made of a material that transmits actinic radiation. The element serves as a window to facilitate the curing of light-curable orthodontic adhesive beneath the appliance base, while simultaneously preventing movement of the adhesive through the passageway. Optionally, one or more optical fibers are provided to facilitate curing of the adhesive.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 22, 2002
Date of Patent: June 1, 2004
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Russell A. Jordan, Oscar M. Binder, Evangelos G. Georgakis, Oliver L. Puttler
  • Patent number: 6582226
Abstract: An orthodontic appliance such as a bracket or buccal tube has a latch for retaining an archwire in an archwire slot. The latch releases the archwire from the archwire slot whenever the archwire exerts a force on the appliance that exceeds a certain minimum value. The minimum value is less than about one-half of the force required in the same direction to debond the appliance from the tooth, and thus reduces the likelihood that the appliance will unintentionally debond from the tooth during the course of orthodontic treatment.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 3, 2001
Date of Patent: June 24, 2003
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Russell A. Jordan, Ming-Lai Lai, Evangelos G. Georgakis, Robert C. Manemann, Oscar M. Binder, James D. Cleary
