  • Patent number: 5381342
Abstract: A strip is displaced longitudinally with its edges parallel to a stationary machine centerline at a predetermined travel speed through a monitoring station and through a trimming station spaced downstream from the monitoring station and equipped with a pair of transversely offset trimming heads. The transverse offset of the strip edges relative to the machine centerline is continuously monitored at the monitoring station and respective outputs corresponding to the transverse offsets between the respective edges and the machine centerline at the monitoring station are produced. The time the strip takes to travel from the monitoring station to the trimming station is calculated based on the strip travel speed and the longitudinal spacing between the stations. The trimming heads are transversely displaced in accordance with the calculated time and the respective transverse edge offset such that the heads remain in contact with the strip. Continuous edge portions are thus cut from the strip with the heads.

  • Patent number: 5266770
Abstract: A strip welding machine for butt-welding cut surfaces of a strip beginning and a strip end of metal strips to be connected is described. The welding seam is manufactured with a laser welding head. In order to obtain a plane and parallel and gap-free butt joint of the cut surfaces, two separately mounted cutting tools are provided. Each cutting tool has an upper knife and two lower knives, wherein each upper knife is moved virtually without a gap between the two lower knives. Consequently, the cut surfaces at the strip end and the cut surfaces at the strip beginning of the metal strips to be connected are manufactured with equal cutting forces, so that dimensional inaccuracies cannot occur.

  • Patent number: 5219113
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for the treatment of metal strip, particularly for the treatment of hot-rolled metal strip in an entry portion of a pickling line through which the metal strip travels continuously. The method includes straightening the metal strip which is being uncoiled from an uncoiling reel under a predetermined strip tension, then severing the unstraightened ends of the strip for producing straightened ends of the strips, and subsequently connecting the strip end of an advancing metal strip to a strip end of a subsequent metal strip. Immediately after being uncoiled, the metal strip is straightened by stretch-bending and a strip tension is produced which is sufficiently high for straightening by stretch-bending without increasing the uncoiling tension.

  • Patent number: 5182931
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for continuous tension stretching of thin metal strips. The strip is conducted through a set of brake rollers and a set of pull rollers and the strip is subjected to a stretch-forming or stretch pull operation between the two sets of rollers for stretching the strip in the plastic range, wherein the stretch pull force corresponds to the yield point of the strip material. The strip is subjected between the set of brake rollers and the set of pull rollers only to a stretch-pull which is required for stretching the strip in the plastic range. As a result, transverse elongation during plastic stretching is minimized, so that center troughs no longer occur and, when the strip is longitudinally divided, the strip portions no longer have unequal side lengths.

  • Patent number: 5142892
Abstract: An adjusting arrangement for the roll gap or rolling force in rolling mill stands. The arrangement includes two hydraulic adjusting cylinders which act from both sides on a work roll to be adjusted. The adjusting cylinders each have two or more piston surfaces to which pressure medium can be applied independently of each other, either individually, in any combination, or to all piston surfaces. This makes it possible to adjust the rolling force within the respective rolling force range in such a way that percentage variations of the rolling force are minimized and, consequently, different roughnesses and differences in wall thicknesses can be almost completely eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4955553
Abstract: A reel for coiling and uncoiling metal strips includes an expanding mandrel which is actuated by a spreader cylinder. The expanding mandrel is driven by a drive motor with a control and computing unit for determining the outer diameter of the coil at any given time. The outer diameter is introduced into a microprocessor which determines the initial spreading pressure and the winding pull to be maintained. The winding pull to be maintained is introduced into the control and computing unit. The microprocessor further determines, in dependence on the outer diameter of the coil, the required spreading pressure which is generated in the spreading cyclinder. As a result, the expanding mandrel always operates with a spreading force which is dependent upon the outer diameter of the coil at any given time, so that overloading is eliminated and wear is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 4539830
Abstract: A thin metal strip is made by hot-rolling a strip workpiece, stretch-bend leveling the hot-rolled strip workpiece immediately after hot-rolling it, tensioning the strip workpiece with a predetermined tension while stretch-bend leveling it, and thereafter coiling up the workpiece. In addition the workpiece is rapidly cooled immediately after stretch-bend leveling it and before coiling it up. Thus the workpiece is stretch-bend leveled before it cools so it can be treated while still about 1100.degree. C., at which temperature it is still very plastic. The workpiece can therefore be deformed greatly while under modest tension, so as to produce a very thin product that is very uniform. The tension in the strip merely serves to keep the workpiece looped over as much an arc as possible around the stretch-bending rolls.

  • Patent number: 4534198
Abstract: An apparatus used in combination with a hot-rolling line having a succession of roll stands through which passes a strip workpiece in a horizontal transport direction has at least one vessel downstream of the roll stands in the direction and aligned in the direction therewith. This vessel is formed with an upstream inlet and a downstream outlet. A bath of a liquid coolant fills the vessel to a level above the inlet and outlet openings. Guides draw the workpiece from the roll stands into the inlet, through the vessel, and out of the outlet thereof. Thus the workpiece is wholly immersed in and cooled by the liquid coolant within the vessel. A pump feeds fresh coolant into the vessel and withdraws hot coolant therefrom. A plurality of such vessels, each with a respective bath and pump means, is provided with all of the inlets and outlets aligned. The inlet and outlet are formed as horizontally extending slots closely conforming the cross-sectional shape of the workpiece.
