    Abstract: A computer system obtains a first set of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) data representing a rock sample obtained from a subterranean formation that includes gas-bearing sandstone. The system obtains a plurality of second sets of micro-CT data in a sequence, each representing the rock sample after a performance of a corresponding triaxial shear test on the rock sample. Performing each triaxial shear test includes applying a triaxial load force to the rock sample, and removing the triaxial load force from the rock sample. The system estimates, based on the first micro-CT data and the plurality of second sets of micro-CT data, one or more characteristics of the underground formation, including a permeability of the underground formation and/or a porosity of the underground formation. The system causes one or more resource extraction operations to be performed on the underground formation based on the one or more characteristics of the underground formation.

The systems and methods solve the finite element model to determine stresses of the formation surrounding the wellbore. The systems and methods determine a size of one or more rock fragments based on whether the determined stresses from the finite element model are greater than a threshold stress of a failure criterion. The systems and methods determine the probability, select the wellbore completion setup of the wellbore based on the bridging probability, and install the selected wellbore completion setup in the wellbore.

The data includes a surface location, reservoir property data, mechanical property data, and offset well information of the hydrocarbon reservoir. The computer system generates a three-dimensional (3D) geomechanical model of the hydrocarbon reservoir based on the data. The 3D geomechanical model is for identifying a sweet spot in the hydrocarbon reservoir for drilling and stimulation, and placing a hydrocarbon well in the sweet spot. The computer system determines drilling parameters based on the 3D geomechanical model and the offset well information. The drilling parameters are to reduce an enlargement of a wellbore of the hydrocarbon well. The computer system monitors the drilling parameters until the hydrocarbon well reaches a particular depth from a surface of the Earth. The computer system performs a rigless operation on the hydrocarbon well.
