Patent number: 6682632Abstract: The invention relates to a roll for a paper or board machine comprising axle journals on whose support the roll is arranged to revolve, end flanges with which the axle journals are connected, and a mantle which is connected with the end flanges. The mantle is provided with a number of openings extending through the mantle and/or recesses formed into the outer surface of the mantle, which openings and/or recesses form a regular pattern. Solid connecting portions in the outer surface of the mantle around said openings and/or recesses are opened so that, from each opening and/or recess, there is a connection, provided in the form of a groove or an additional recess extending into the outer surface of the roll mantle, with at least each of the openings and/or recesses adjacent to it.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2002Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Osmo Nikulainen, Heikki Karttunen, Antti Leinonen, Seppo Kiviranta, Hannu Villgrén, Miikka Kettunen, Samppa Salminen, Mika Viertola

Patent number: 6206813Abstract: An arrangement of equipment in connection with a variable crown roll provided with loading shoes to prevent foaming of fluid. The arrangement includes a separate guide and a face that guides the fluid in order to guide the fluid smoothly away from the inner face of the roll mantle of the roll and into a collecting trough.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1999Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventor: Osmo Nikulainen

Patent number: 5896813Abstract: A gradient calender including two calender rolls arranged to form a calendering nip, at least one of the rolls being a hard-faced calender roll which is heatable to a high temperature whereby a web is passed through the calendering nip for hot calendering the web. At least one of the calender rolls is arranged to be loaded toward the calendering nip by a respective variable-crown support roll so that an auxiliary nip between the support roll and the respective calender roll and the calendering nip are in a common nip plane. Deflection of the calendering nip and the calender rolls is substantially prevented by the effect of the load produced by hydraulic loading devices arranged in the support roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1996Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Osmo Nikulainen, Ari Lehto

Patent number: 5170547Abstract: The present invention concerns a method and a device for the balancing of a roll. Fluidizable balancing agent is placed onto a face of the roll at a location required by the balancing, at which the agent adheres and hardens.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1991Date of Patent: December 15, 1992Assignee: Valmet Paper Machinery Inc.Inventors: Osmo Nikulainen, Jukka Koistinen

Patent number: 4856154Abstract: Method in a variable-crown roll in which hydraulic loading elements or a series of hydraulic loading elements are used. Such series of elements acts along a plane of a nip that can be formed between the variable-crown roll and a counter-roll thereof, with such elements or series being situated between a central axle of the roll and a cylindrical mantle which is rotatable about the central axle through radial bearings. The central axle is supported by axle journals thereof on deflection bearings. In the method, the central axle is pivoted about the deflection bearings thereof over an angle which is within a range of about 30.degree. to 180.degree.. By the effect of such pivoting, the variable-crown roll and the mantle thereof are shifted away from the nip, so that the nip is opened. This shifting is produced by the axis of pivoting of the deflection bearings being situated by a certain eccentricity distance further away from a nip line of the closed nip, than the axis of rotation of the roll mantle.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1987Date of Patent: August 15, 1989Assignee: Valmet OyInventors: Osmo Nikulainen, Vesa Kainu
