  • Patent number: 5038485
Abstract: A wheel alignment measurement system includes one single portable angle measurement instrument (10) which is connected to a stationary unit (14) via a line (12). The angle measurement instrument (10) includes a gyroscope unit supported in full cardanic manner and being connected to an angle measurement device. By applying the angle measurement instrument subsequently to each of the wheels of the vehicle to be measured the respective angles between the wheel and a directionally stable axis of the gyroscope unit are measured and are stored in memories (S). Subsequently the desired wheel alignment parameters are calculated by processing the measurement values stored in the memories (s) by means of calculation circuitries (R) and are displayed in the display unit (A).

  • Patent number: 4860457
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the steering angle of a steerable vehicle wheel comprises first and second electric angle measurement instruments interconnected by an elastic tensile member and electronic circuitry connected to the angle measurement instruments. The first angle measurement instrument is attached to the wheel by a pivotal measuring arm at a generally perpendicular axis to the wheel. The second angle measurement instrument is attached to a measuring base by a pivotal measuring arm and is arranged approximately along the axis of rotation of the wheel. The electronic circuitry receives signals issued by the angle measurement instruments and processes these signals to generate a steering angle signal. A display device is provided and is connected to the electronic circuitry. The apparatus can also be used to measure the track differential angle for each steerable wheel of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4625419
Abstract: The wheel alignment checking apparatus for use on a pair of wheels on a motor vehicle uses gage disks adapted to be secured to the wheels to be examined, a transverse support yoke, measuring plates mounted perpendicularly thereon and at least one angle measuring device mounted on one plate, for example by way of magnetic probes, so that one end of the device is on the plate and a head of the device engages the respective gage disk and any angle between the plane of the disk and of the adjacent plate is converted by a rotary potentiometer, for example, into a signal which may be read directly or after offsetting against other signals in a known way.

  • Patent number: 4481716
Abstract: A wheel alignment measuring apparatus including four angle measuring instruments for mounting on front wheels and rear wheels of a vehicle, and including a calculation circuit for the determination of track measuring values. A measuring bridge is operatively provided essentially transversely to the driving direction and is positioned approximately between the front wheels and the rear wheels. Four additional angle measuring instruments are provided, two being operatively arranged on one side and two being operatively arranged on the other side of the measuring bridge. An elastic tension member is operatively connected between the four angle measuring instruments and the four additional angle measuring instruments for measuring the angle positions of the wheels. The calculation circuit determines the track measuring values from comparing angular positions of all angle measuring instruments.

  • Patent number: 4394798
Abstract: A wheel alignment measuring apparatus of the invention has angle measuring instruments joined up with the input of an electronic signal processing unit. A first and a second angle measuring instrument (1, 2) are placed on a nearside and on an offside front wheel support turntable respectively for sending in each case a signal representative of the steering angle of the front wheels to the signal processing unit. The processing unit calculates therefrom the steering difference angle. A third and a fourth and furthermore a fifth and a sixth angle measuring instrument are so placed in the one case on the nearside and in the other case on the offside front wheel that by way of the signal processing unit on the footing of changes in the output signals of the first and the third and on the other hand of the second and fourth angle measuring instruments the caster of the nearside and of the offside front wheels may be calculated.

  • Patent number: 4341021
Abstract: A measuring apparatus for the alignment of automobile wheels has six angle pickups of which four are fixed to the wheels lined up with their axes, while two further pickups are fixed to the front wheels by forwardly running support arms. The pickups are more specially electrical units giving electrical ready-for-processing outputs, which pickups are joined together by springs or the like running between one unit and the next one so that two such joined-up pickups have equal and opposite effects on each other.
