Patent number: 6416703Abstract: A definitive socket for residual limb prosthetic use is formed in a single molding step by compressive pressure casting or molding a pre-formed, moldable, hardenable socket material over a residual limb and curing the socket material to a load-bearing hardened condition while it is maintained under peripheral compressive pressure against the residual limb and while the residual limb is tensioned in a distal direction during the casting process. The combination of pressure casting the socket material and applying tension to the residual limb in a distal direction while the socket material is curing results in forming a definitive socket that fits well to the residual limb after curing without substantial rectification. Pressure relief formations, socket coverings, and a prosthesis coupler may be compression molded simultaneously with the socket.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1999Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Assignee: Ossur hfInventors: Össur Kristinsson, Tryggvi Sveinbjörnsson, Hilmar Br. Patent number: 6136039Abstract: A silicone elastomer suspension liner for a prosthesis includes a soft inner silicone elastomer layer and a relatively harder outer silicone elastomer layer, with both layers being formulated to provide desired physical characteristics of the liner. An elasticity controlling matrix material and a prosthesis connecting element may be provided in the distal end area of the liner. The softer inner layer closely conforms to the residual limb that is to be fitted to a prosthesis while the harder outer layer provides durability and strength for the liner.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1998Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Ossur hfInventors: Ossur Kristinsson, Hilmar Br. Patent number: 5972036Abstract: A prosthesis socket material includes a pre-formed tubular sleeve-like reinforcement web of fibers pre-impregnated with an uncured, preferably water activatable, moldable, hardenable resin material, with an integrated prosthesis coupler at one end, the coupler provided with a central aperture. The material is moldable under compression using a one-step compressive molding system. The web of fibers preferably is constituted of a radially compliant tube made of bias braided carbon fibers.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1998Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: Ossur USA Inc.Inventors: Ossur Kristinsson, Tryggvi Sveinbjornsson, Hilmar Br. Patent number: 5885509Abstract: A prosthesis socket casting device includes a base member on which an elongated annular molding bladder is mounted, the bladder peripherally enclosing a generally centrally located casting area and extendable when inflated from the forward side of the base. The bladder is formed of a pliable, air impermeable, relatively non-stretchable sheet material enclosing, in cooperation with the base, an air chamber peripherally surrounding the casting area. The casting area includes an open residual limb receiving end and extends from such end to the base, and an inflation system for the bladder is provided. The casting device may be used in conjunction with a prosthesis suction socket that includes a tension member at its distal end connectable to the base member during a casting procedure. Moldable and settable prosthesis socket or other moldable casting material is placed over the suction socket and is compression molded by the inflated bladder while the casting material cures.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1997Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Ossur HFInventor: Ossur Kristinsson

Patent number: 5139525Abstract: The invention relates to a prosthetic foot, including a hollow cosmesis (7) with a spring (1) fixed therein, and extending in the longitudinal direction of the foot for operative connection to an adapter (4) for connection to a leg prosthesis (5). The spring (1) is adapted to absorb energy on heel strike and to release this energy on toe-off. In accordance with the invention the spring (1) includes at least one spring element (8) which in the rear portion of the foot has a curved portion in a vertical direction, and a snubbing element in association with the curved spring portion or portions (15).Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Inventor: Ossur Kristinsson

Patent number: 4923474Abstract: A sleeve member (1) for enclosing and being fixed to a body part, such as an amputation stump, has a substantially frusto-conical shape with the truncated end thereof completely closed and at least slightly rounded and is made of an airtight material. The sleeve member (1) is characterized in that it substantially is made of an elastic material, at least the distal portion thereof exhibiting such anisotropy with regard to the elasticity that it has a relatively high elasticity in a radial direction and is substantially inelastic axially.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1988Date of Patent: May 8, 1990Assignee: Ossur HfInventors: Bo Klasson, Ossur Kristinsson

Patent number: 4634446Abstract: A device for attaching an artificial limb to the stump of an amputated limb. The device comprises a sleeve (1, 2) intended for receiving the stump, the sleeve being in load-transferring connection with the artificial limb. The sleeve is made of a flexible material which is non-stretchable when subjected to the loads in question. The shape and volume of the sleeve are arranged to be adapted to the stump so as to obtain substantially total contact between the surface of the stump and the inner surface of the sleeve for distribution of the forces acting on the stump over the inner surface of the sleeve. For the purpose of transferring the load between the sleeve and the artificial limb a load-transferring construction (7, 8, 10) connected with the artificial limb is attached to the proximal end of the sleeve. Means (17) are also included for fixing the position of the distal end of the sleeve (1, 2) relative to the artificial limb.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1981Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Inventor: Ossur Kristinsson
