  • Publication number: 20050181880
Abstract: A torsional vibration damper, particularly for use between the engine and the transmission of the power train in a motor vehicle, including two flywheels rotatable relative to each other against the opposition of a first energy storing device employing, for example, one or more coil springs and a second energy storing device, which is carried by one of the flywheels, which operates in parallel with the first energy storing device and which opposes rotation of the two flywheels relative to each other.

  • Publication number: 20050096162
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission including a drive element rotatable about a drive axis, an output element rotatable about an output axis parallel to the drive axis, and an adjusting mechanism with which the drive axis and the output axis can be laterally offset from each other. Coupling elements operate between the drive element and the output element and are spaced from each other in the peripheral direction of the drive element and output element for transmitting torque between the elements. The coupling elements change the movement of a peripheral region of the drive element faster than that of the output element so that forces acting on the coupling elements from the drive element and the output element lie substantially in a common plane that extends perpendicularly to the axes of rotation. The continuously variable transmission can be incorporated into a transfer case for an all-wheel drive system.

  • Publication number: 20050039572
Abstract: A drive assembly for a motor vehicle having a stepless transmission including a driven input shaft coupled to an engine and at least one output shaft. The input and output shafts are drivingly connected through an eccentric drive provided on the input shaft. A freewheel system is provided on the output shaft. The eccentric drive and the freewheel system are interconnected by at least one connecting element. • Publication number: 20050000774
Abstract: A multiple clutch unit for a power train. The clutch includes a first clutch, particularly a multiple-disk clutch that is non-rotatably connected to a first shaft. A second clutch, particularly a multiple-disk clutch, is non-rotatably connected to a second shaft and is arranged coaxially with the first clutch. The clutches can be actuated by means of piston/cylinder units, particularly hydraulically. The piston/cylinder unit associated with the first clutch includes a substantially cup-shaped cylinder that is connected to and cooperates with the first shaft in a non-rotatable but axially movable manner.

  • Patent number: 6699132
Abstract: Apparatus for damping vibrations between the output element of the engine and the power train in a motor vehicle has flywheels which are rotatable relative to each other. One flywheel is mounted on the output element of the engine and the other flywheel is connectable to the power train by a friction clutch. Vibration dampers are installed between the flywheels, and such dampers are confined in a housing which is provided on the one flywheel and contains a supply of viscous fluid medium for the parts of the dampers. The housing is the input element of the dampers and the output member of the dampers is a flange which extends into the housing and is axially movably coupled to the other flywheel. The flywheels rotate with respect to one another and the dampers contain resilient elements which selectively oppose rotation of the flywheels during various stages of rotation. The resilient elements are also arranged not to oppose rotation of the flywheels during an initial stage.

  • Patent number: 6648781
Abstract: An adjustable pulley for use in a continuously variable transmission has two coaxial flanges at least one of which is a composite flange having an annular main section with a conical surface adjacent a reinforcing liner of wear resistant material. The liner is secured to the main section of the composite flange by a one-piece or composite disc-shaped insert one side of which has several portions affixed (such as bonded and/or riveted) to the adjacent side of the liner, and the other side of which has several portions affixed to the conical surface and/or another part of the main section. Those portions of the one side of the insert which are affixed to the liner are out of register with those portions of the other side of the insert which are affixed to the main section to thus enable the liner to move relative to the conical surface in one or more directions other than circumferentially of the main section.

One flywheel is mounted on the output element of the engine and another flywheel is connectable to the power train by a friction clutch. Installed between the flywheels are at least two resilient dampers operating in parallel. In a first stage of relative rotation between the flywheels from a starting position, only one of the dampers is active to oppose the rotation. In a next-following second stage of relative rotation the other of the two dampers becomes active to oppose the rotation in parallel with the first damper.

  • Patent number: 6443864
Abstract: A torque transmitting mechanism between coaxial first and second rotary parts, at least one of which should be free to move axially relative to the other part, employs two frames at least one of which is resilient. Both frames surround one of the parts (e.g., a shaft for one adjustable pulley of a continuously variable transmission), one of the frames has spaced-apart sections affixed to the first part, and the other frame has spaced-apart sections affixed to the second part (e.g., to one flange of the adjustable pulley). Rivets and/or other suitable fasteners couple the two frames to each other at locations each of which is spaced apart from a section of one of the frames and from a section of the other frame. Each frame can have a polygonal outline with corners which are alternatingly coupled to the other frame and to the respective rotary part. The braces between the corners of each polygonal frame can be profiled to oppose certain types of deformation but to permit other types of deformation.

  • Patent number: 6435994
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission or an analogous torque transmitting system has two rotary members in the form of wheels, gears or pulleys (such as adjustable pulleys) which are rotatable about parallel axes. An endless flexible element in the form of a link chain, pintle chain or belt has arcuate portions trained over the rotary members and elongated reaches or stretches extending between the arcuate portions. At least one of the stretches is at least partially confined in but movable lengthwise relative to an elongated rail or another suitable guide which at least reduces lateral stray movements of the respective stretch. This reduces noise as well as the wear upon the endless flexible element and the rotary members.

  • Patent number: 6428445
Abstract: A transmission has an rpm-converter controlled by a hydraulic system. The hydraulic system has a supply circuit from a fluid-conveyor device to the rpm-converter, a return circuit to carry the spent fluid back from the rpm-converter, and a run-off circuit to return the run-off portion of fluid from a flow-regulating device that regulates the volume flow in the supply circuit. The return circuit and the run-off circuit are merged in a circuit junction that continues into a flow-back circuit.

  • Patent number: 6422367
Abstract: The present invention presents a method for operating a motor vehicle which has at least one clutch device. The method includes determining at least one part of a dependence of a path of at least one clutch characteristic on at least one pressure value. The pressure value relates to a pressure of a hydraulic fluid at a predetermined site. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the hydraulic pressure is detected in an area of a torque sensor which produces the hydraulic pressure dependent on a size (magnitude) of an engine torque.

  • Patent number: 6375233
Abstract: A transmission for use in the power train of a motor vehicle has a rotary first component (such as a shaft), a second component which may but need not be rotatable, a fluid-conveying conduit having a first end portion extending into a first socket provided in the first component and a second end portion extending into a socket of the second component, a split-ring piston packing located in an external groove of the first end portion, and an O-ring received in an external groove of the second end portion. The O-ring prevents the conduit and the second component from rotating relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 6361470
Abstract: An adjustable pulley for use in a continuous variable transmission in the power train of a motor vehicle has an axially fixed first conical flange and an axially movable second conical flange. The hydraulic control system which moves the second flange relative to the first flange is provided with at least one first plenum chamber which receives pressurized fluid when the second flange is to move toward the first flange, and with an additional plenum chamber which receives pressurized fluid when the second flange is to move away from the first flange. The admission of pressurized fluid into the additional chamber is regulated in dependency upon the RPM of the flanges. Rapid evacuation of pressurized fluid from the additional chamber can take place by way of a relief valve which opens when the pressure of fluid in the additional chamber rises to a preselected value. This renders it possible to rapidly shift between overdrive and underdrive.
