  • Patent number: 12030672
Abstract: A system and method for on-demand retention, release, and positioning of structures including space structures (e.g., solar panels, probes, antennae, scientific instruments, fairings, etc.). The system allows for a lightweight and reliable deployment mechanism utilizing shape memory alloy (SMA) technology that allows for structure transition from a stowed to a deployed configuration. SMAs are used for both the active actuation members (e.g., wires) and passive connecting members (e.g., hinges). The retention and release (R&R) mechanism includes the SMA actuator, a static and detachable plate, a pin puller, and retaining latches/hooks. Once released, the deployment and positioning mechanism consists of SMA preloaded hinges and latches. The innovative system and method may be used for deployment of CubeSat and smallsats solar panels, antennae, and the like where volume and power resources are very limited.

  • Patent number: 11174850
Abstract: A plurality of shape memory alloy tubes (SMTs) of one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) types is configured as an element in a rotary actuator system in a nested manner. In various configurations, the nested SMTs provide one or more modes of multiplication (torque output or angular displacement), rotation reversibility and bias loading. The innovation provides for leveraging the modes for reductions in the rotary actuator system size, weight, or complexity or combinations thereof, or providing improved and more stable actuation capabilities in a given envelope.

  • Patent number: 11131294
Abstract: A scalable plurality of shape memory alloy (SMA) elements are configured to provide a continuous rotation actuator system. The plurality of SMA elements are coupled to a Ring Gear element, as well as to a Sun Gear element and a provision for thermal cycle return assist of the SMA elements. A plurality of Transmission elements provide for controlled rotary actuation in a desired direction with lock capability that provides for continuous rotary motion even as the SMA elements undergo reciprocating rotary action during their thermal cycling without running into system component rotation limits. The innovation distinguishes over other innovative approaches by way of at least the Ring Gear element, the manner of lock control, and the return assist element.

  • Patent number: 10738373
Abstract: An apparatus and method for creating shapes (e.g., letters, numbers, characters, symbols, or a combination thereof) using shape memory alloy (SMAs) component. The SMA components shaped into formed shapes that can then be distorted to obscure the original formed shaped. The original formed shape can be restored upon exposure to a heat source, magnetic field, or upon load removal.

  • Patent number: 10675781
Abstract: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) may be used for static rock splitting. The SMAs may be used as high-energy multifunctional materials, which have a unique ability to recover large deformations and generate high stresses in response to thermal loads.
