Publication number: 20090220850Abstract: A liquid-cooled battery, in particular in the form of an energy store for an electrical drive in a motor vehicle is provided. The battery has a plurality of storage cells 2 and at least one volume 4 which makes thermally conductive contact with the storage cells 2 and through which a cooling medium can flow. Each of the storage cells 2 has a safety valve 12 which opens the storage cell when a predetermined media pressure in it is exceeded, and connects the volume of the storage cell to the surrounding area. The safety valve 12 is arranged in the storage cell 2 and the storage cell 2 is arranged with respect to the volume 4 through which the cooling medium can flow such that a connection is produced between the volume 4 through which the cooling medium can flow, and the interior of the storage cell 2 if the safety valve 2 is operated.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2006Publication date: September 3, 2009Applicant: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Otmar Bitsche, Markus Bulling, Wolfgang Duerr, Wolfgang Schwienbacher, Thomas Soczka-Guth, Lars Weinschenker

Patent number: 7554330Abstract: This objective is achieved according to the present invention in that in a method for determining the deterioration of a battery, the charge and discharge cycles of the battery are measured by number and depth of the charge/discharge. For each of the charge and discharge cycles, a characteristic deterioration value is determined on the basis of a deterioration curve that is characteristic of the specific battery type. These individual characteristic deterioration values are then summed up to obtain the deterioration of the battery.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2004Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: Daimler AGInventors: Cyrus Ashtiani, Rick Lagerstrom, Otmar Bitsche, Bernd Spier

Patent number: 6333568Abstract: A switching process and apparatus for switching-off an electric energy supply of a vehicle has two switching elements which are mounted in the proximity of the electric energy source, and couple it to supply electric energy to consuming devices of the vehicle. In the event of a fault, an all-pole switch-off is implemented by opening both switching elements. One of the two switching elements is an operating switch by means of which the electric energy source can be switched off in normal operation. In the case of a vehicle driven by an electric motor in a normal operation the driving current of the electric motor is first controlled downward, and the operating switch is then opened when the driving current is decreased.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1999Date of Patent: December 25, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Otmar Bitsche, Robert Streit

Patent number: 6198183Abstract: An electric drive unit includes an electronic control and monitoring module integrally connected to an electric motor. The housing of the electric motor has a double-walled construction to form a water jacket with cooling water passages therein. The electronic module includes at least one high power component that requires cooling. This component is mounted directly on a cooling insert that extends through a recess in the electronic module housing and is inserted in an opening provided in the outer wall of the motor housing. In this manner, the cooling insert is integrated into the water jacket of the motor housing and is directly cooled by the cooling water flowing in the cooling passages. A very compact and reliable construction is achieved, in which the electric motor and the electronic module share a common water cooling circuit. External water hoses and external electrical connections between the electric motor and the electronic module are avoided.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1999Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Hermann Baeumel, Hermann Kilian, Bernhard Schuch, Otmar Bitsche

Patent number: 5585681Abstract: A drive unit for an electric motor car comprises an electric motor attached to a transmission unit, a housing for the electric motor, a control housing within which are electronic controls for the electric motor, and a cooling circuit having a cooling liquid flowing therethrough. The control housing has a bottom which is located on top of the motor housing. The cooling circuit has a first portion which cools the bottom of the control housing, and a second portion which cools the motor housing. The first and second portions of the cooling circuit are connected in series so that the cooling liquid can first cool the bottom of the control housing and then the motor housing.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1994Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Steyr-Daimler Puch AGInventor: Otmar Bitsche

Patent number: 5498216Abstract: A drive arrangement for an electric motor vehicle comprises an electric motor, a control rectifier which is connected to and controls the output of the electric motor, a gear box having at least first and second gears, and first and second positively engaging clutches, such as dog clutches, which are associated with the first and second gears. A movable actuator is also provided which causes the first and second positively engaging clutches to engage the first and second gears. A control unit is connected to the actuator and the control rectifier. The control unit receives signals indicative of the rotational speeds at the input and output sides of the gear box, and of the position of the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: Steyr-Daimler-Puch AGInventors: Otmar Bitsche, Erwin Schneeberfer

Patent number: 5057752Abstract: A novel circuit for igniting and operating gas discharge lamps, in particular metal vapour lamps, comprises a buffer capacitor (C4) connected to a direct-current voltage (1,2) and connected in parallel with a circuit consisting of a choke and a capacitor connected in series (L1, C1). An electronic switch (S), for example a transistor and a recovery diode (D), is connected in parallel with the capacitor (C1). A second choke-capacitor series circuit (L2, C3) connected in series with the metal vapour lamp (L) is connected in parallel with the capacitor (C1), which is connected in parallel with the electronic switch (S). A second capacitor (C2) is directly connected in parallel with the the metal vapour lamp (L). The ignition circuit and the power supply circuit for the metal vapour lamp (L) are combined in this fluorescent lamp ballast, thus obviating the need for a separate ignition circuit. In addition, the circuit operates independently of the supply voltage.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1990Date of Patent: October 15, 1991Assignee: Stylux-Gesellschaft fur Lichtelektronik m.b.H.Inventors: Wolfgang Grabner, Otmar Bitsche
