  • Patent number: 7830763
Abstract: An optical disc apparatus is provided with optimum power control (OPC) to determine an optimum laser power needed for recording data on an optical disc. Such an apparatus comprises a controller to determine optimum writing power in such a way of re-establishing a new test zone when an erasing error is detected on an initially established test zone in order to perform the OPC. When the erasing error is detected on a test zone of an OPC zone, a new test zone is re-established, so that OPC is performed rapidly while reducing an error frequency occurring when optimum writing power is not determined.

  • Publication number: 20070263507
Abstract: An optical disc apparatus and a method of determining an optimal writing power are provided to reduce the time required for Optimum Power Calibration (OPC) and reduce the difference between OPC results. The optical disc apparatus includes a light source which emits a laser beam to write/read data to/from an optical disc; a reader which receives a laser beam reflected from the optical disc and reads data written on the optical disc; and a controller which, to reduce the difference between OPC results, controls the light source to write test data more than once for determining an optimal writing power, controls the reader to read the test data, measures read quality of the test data, and detects an optimal writing power based on the measured read quality.

  • Publication number: 20070195679
Abstract: An optical disc apparatus and a method for performing optical power study thereof can prevent errors for a power study result, which may be generated in a condition that the output power of a laser diode (LD) is saturated at a high temperature, in which the power study detects output characteristics of the LD. The optical disc apparatus includes a laser output device which outputs a laser beam in response to a light output control signal, a sensor which detects some of the outputted laser beam to output a signal corresponding to the outputted laser beam, and a controller which applies the light output control signal of a certain range to the laser output device and which calculates characteristics of the laser output power which is outputted from the laser output device in response to the light output control signal, based on the output signals of the sensor, which correspond to the light output control signal, and whether the laser output device is in a saturated state.

  • Publication number: 20070189345
Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling power of a laser diode (LD) are provided, which allow the power of the laser diode (LD) affecting a performance of an optical recording apparatus to be constantly maintained at an optimum state, regardless of a variation in temperature. The method for controlling power of a laser diode (LD) used for an optical recording apparatus to record data in an optical recording device comprises: a) sampling the LD's power generated when data is recorded; and b) compensating for a variation of the LD's power changed according to sampling locations.

  • Publication number: 20060285460
Abstract: A method of managing optimum power control (OPC) data in a lead-in zone of a rewritable high-density optical disc, wherein an OPC back data zone is allocated in the lead-in zone of the rewritable high-density optical disc and OPC data is written in the OPC back data zone so that a subsequent OPC process can be immediately performed based on the written OPC data. The method includes allocating a specified zone used in performing an OPC process within the lead-in zone of the rewritable high-density optical disc, writing OPC data for the OPC process in the specified zone, reading the OPC data written in the specified zone, and performing the OPC process based on the read OPC data.
