  • Patent number: 5304230
Abstract: In a method of disposing of organic and inorganic substances, the substances are gasified and decomposed in and/or above a liquid bath of a metal alloy under negative pressure, off-gases forming are seized, collected and purified and separated. To prevent the formation of health-endangering emissions, such as dioxins and furans, and to recover pure starting materials for the production of organic substances, the substances are charged under negative pressure into an induction furnace containing a melt (18) of an iron alloy, in particular a steel melt, and are decomposed in the latter at liquid steel temperature, whereby the entry of gaseous O.sub.2 is avoided. This is also the case at the production of steel from scrap interspersed with organic substances.

  • Patent number: 4993689
Abstract: In a process for continuously melting scrap (6) and/or pig iron within a converter (1), the converter (1) is heated in proximity of the bottom (3) with sub-stoichiometric burners (4), having their flames (5) essentially radially directed into the interior of the converter (1). In this case, secondary air or O.sub.2 is supplied at a distance above the burner plane for the purpose of completing the combustion. The melt is, optionally together with slag, discharged via a tapping means (9) laterally connected to the converter (1) into a mobile ladle (19). For the purpose of interchanging ladles (19), the converter (1) is swivelled into a position in which the level of the melt is located below the taphole (11).

  • Patent number: 4957547
Abstract: A process for continuously melting steel from largely already reduced iron containing material such as pig iron and/or scrap iron, in which process the melt is poured into a ladle for performing subsequent metallurgical steps. The metallurgical slag is, by adding flux, adjusted to20-77.2% FeO, preferably 25.7-50% FeO10-30% SiO.sub.22-15% Al.sub.2 O.sub.35-20% MgO0.13-6.45% MnO, perferably 0.5-5% MnO1-10% CaO0.1-5% Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3P+S traces.

  • Patent number: 4950325
Abstract: An apparatus for heating steel melts covered with a slag rich in iron oxide, and employed in particular for continuous steel making processes such as the KVA process, incorporates a height-adjustable injection lance for supplying metals which react exothermally with the melt and with the oxygen in the slag. The nozzle of the injection lance is adjustably arranged above the contents of the ladle so that it can be maintained in the zone of the melt/slag phase boundary.

  • Patent number: 4941913
Abstract: In a process for heating within a ladle (5) steel melts (10) being covered with a slag (8) rich in iron oxides, in particular for continuous steel production processes such as, for example, the KVA-process, thereby using metallothermal heat, there is (are) during filling the ladle (5), insufflated by an inert gas via nozzles (14) provided in the bottom (12) of the receiving ladle (5) for the mixture of bath and slag a metal, such as, for example, Al, Si, their mixtures or alloys, in particular FeSi, exothermically reacting with the oxygen of the bath and with the oxygen of the slag as well as, optionally, pulverulent slag formers, such as, for example, CaO, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, MgO and/or SiO.sub.2.

  • Patent number: 4925489
Abstract: For the purpose of melting scrap iron, pelletized sponge iron in reduced condition, solid pig iron or the like, there is introduced into the melting heat from below a charge-accepting receptacle by means of burners the carbon content within the molten bath is adjusted by a sub-stoichiometric combustion of hydrocarbon. Addition of any coal to the charged material is avoided. By reducing the oxygen flow, in particular by performing the combustion with approximately 0.9-times of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen, and by optionally adding slag formers, the aggressivity of the slag in relation to the furance lining is simultaneously reduced.

  • Patent number: 4525211
Abstract: In order to produce a microkilled steel suitable for free-run continuous casting for subsequent cold forming standardizing of the C - content to .ltoreq.0.05%, preferably .ltoreq.0.03%, Si - content to .ltoreq.0.05%, preferably 0.02-0.04%, and Al - content to .ltoreq.0.006% is proposed. For the equivalent carbon content a value .ltoreq.0.14%, preferably 0.10-0.12% is standardized using the correlationC.sub.eq =%C+1/7%Si+1/5%Mn+1/7%Cr+1/20%Ni+1/9%Cu+1/2% Mo+1/2% Vfor determining the equivalent carbon content. Preferably, the steel is refined in a bottom blowing or bottom rinsing converter and after standardizing the Si - content and/or Mn - content, oxygen activity a.sub.[o] is measured and standardized to 60-150 ppm by adding a corresponding amount of an additional deoxidant, particularly aluminum.
