  • Patent number: 6458245
Abstract: An absorbent, chemithermomechanical pulp produced from lignocellulosic material with a wood yield above 88%, a low resin content <0.15%, a long fibre content above 70%, a short fibre content below 10% and a shive content below 3. The method for producing the pulp comprises the steps of impregnating, preheating, defibering, and washing the material. The impregnation and preheating of the chips are effected in one and the same vessel over a combined time period of a most 2 minutes, particularly at most 1 minute, preferably at most 0.5 minutes; using a warm impregnating liquid having a temperature of at least 100° C., suitably at least 130° C. and preferably having essentially the same temperature as in the preheating process; and preheating the chips at a temperature of 150-175°C., preferably 160-170° C. Defibering is carried out with an energy input which is at most half of the energy input required for defibering when the preheating and defibering are carried out at 135° C.

  • Patent number: 6361650
Abstract: Processes are disclosed for processing low consistency newsprint pulp including refining the pulp in a first refiner to a consistency of greater than 2%, screening the processed pulp with a slotted screen basket with a slot width of from 0.05 to 0.15 mm, with the withdrawal of the primary reject portion being greater than 50%, withdrawing the accept portion for further processing, dewatering the reject portion to provide a high consistency pulp, refining the high consistency pulp in a second refiner, screening the processed high width consistency pulp with a slotted screen basket having a slot of less than 0.15 mm, and combining the two accept portions for the further processing steps.

  • Patent number: 6206309
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for refining lignocellulosic material between a pair of relatively rotary refining elements forming an annular outer refining zone and a central feed zone. The method includes feeding the lignocellulosic material to the central feed zone, accelerating the lignocellulosic material through the central feed zone towards the annular outer refining zone without lignocellulosic material build up in the central feed zone and substantially without working the lignocellulosic material in the central feed zone, the density of the lignocellulosic material in the central feed zone being a maximum of about 10 kg/m3, and mechanically working the lignocellulosic material in the annular outer refining zone, and in which the relatively rotary refining elements have a relative speed of greater than about 50 m/sec.

  • Patent number: 5853534
Abstract: A method of producing mechanical and chemi-mechanical pulp with a yield above 85 % from lignocellulose-containing material for the manufacture of paper or board products. The material is subjected to mechanical processing in at least two steps. The material at its feed into the first step has a temperature below the softening temperature of lignin. When the material is fed into at least one subsequent processing step, it shall have a temperature above the softening temperature of lignin.

  • Patent number: 5145010
Abstract: Methods for producing mechanical pulp are disclosed including impregnating softwood chips with water and a complexing agent, refining the impregnated chips in a first refining step including a double-disk refiner, fractionating the refined softwood pulp to produce a reject portion comprising beteen about 15 and 35% of the refined pulp and including an increased concentration of the long and stiff fibers therein, refining the reject portion in second and third refining steps in which the second refining step employs a greater concentration of pulp than does the third refining step, and fractionating the refined pulp.
