  • Patent number: 8878436
Abstract: A fluorescent lighting device includes an arc tube, an exhaust tube extending from the arc tube, and an amalgam. A resistive heater is located adjacent to at least one of the arc tube and the exhaust tube. A power supply circuit is operatively coupled with the resistive heater. When the fluorescent lighting device is switched from an OFF state to an ON state, the power supply circuit temporarily energizes the resistive heater, thereby heating the at least one of the arc tube and the exhaust tube while the resistive heater is energized, and automatically de-energizing the resistive heater after said heating.

  • Patent number: 8723430
Abstract: A lamp assembly provides both instant light through use of an incandescent/halogen light/lamp source and an energy saving type light provided by a compact fluorescent light/lamp source. Both light sources are enclosed within a common envelope or outer bulb. First and second thermal sensors are provided in the lamp envelope at spaced locations to monitor the temperature of the lamp. When the sum of these two temperatures reaches a preselected value, power to the incandescent lamp source is terminated. Alternatively, when the difference these two temperatures reaches a preselected value, power to the incandescent lamp source is terminated.

  • Patent number: 8633645
Abstract: A discharge lamp having an improved run-up time is disclosed. In an embodiment, the discharge lamp includes a light-transmissive discharge tube extending from a first end to a second end and having an inner surface and an outer surface, a phosphor coating layered onto the inner surface of the discharge tube, and a fill gas composition capable of sustaining a discharge sealed within the discharge tube. Also included is a resistive heating wire positioned about the outer surface of the discharge tube. In some embodiments, a lamp driver circuit is included that operates when the lamp is turned ON to provide power to electrodes in the discharge tube and to provide power to the resistive heating wire, and operates to disconnect power from the resistive heating wire when the discharge lamp achieves a predetermined percentage of its stabilized lumen output.

  • Patent number: 8633642
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a lamp part fixing device and method for lamp components made of shape memory alloy. The device includes a main body that carries, for example, a main or auxiliary amalgam, getter, etc. located at a desired position within a discharge tube of a fluorescent lamp. For example, the amalgam can be advantageously located at preselected axial locations and/or within a diffusion path. The main body is configurable between a first configuration and a second configuration. The first configuration allows the mount to move within the discharge tube when the shape memory alloy is below an alloy transition temperature. The second configuration of the main body allows for controlled placement and immobilization of the device within the discharge tube when the shape memory alloy is raised above the alloy transition temperature. The device is shaped in a generally planar or non-planar configuration.

  • Publication number: 20130278130
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp includes an arc tube comprised of light transmissive material. The arc tube can be for a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). A discharge sustaining fill, which may include mercury and an inert gas, is sealed in the interior of the arc tube. Electrodes are disposed in the sealed interior of the arc tube. An outer envelope is disposed around and spaced apart from the arc tube. The outer envelope can take the form of a conventional incandescent light bulb, candle, globe-shape or reflector shape. The outer envelope includes an opening. The arc tube includes a hollow protrusion that extends adjacent or into the opening. This can provide the arc tube with a lower temperature near the protrusion that can approximate the temperature of the outer envelope (a cold spot). This can regulate the vapor pressure of liquid (e.g., liquid mercury) in the arc tube.
