  • Patent number: 8631269
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to a system and method for replacing a failed node in a distributed data storage network. The network includes storage nodes storing source data amongst them in a redundant manner that is coded using one of minimum-storage, minimum-bandwidth or twin code techniques. On failure of a storage node, means of obtaining the data of the failed node from the existing nodes are described, under each of these coding techniques. This action is performed in a manner that requires a minimal amount of download. The storage space required in the nodes is also minimized.

Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to a distributed storage system comprising of storage nodes storing source data amongst them in a coded, and typically, redundant manner. The data to be stored in the storage nodes may be disseminated from the source across the network in a distributed manner. The system also includes end users who recover the source data by connecting to subsets of the storage nodes. A failed storage node may be repaired by downloading data from subsets of existing nodes. The storage space required in the nodes, and the network bandwidth utilized for repair are minimized.

  • Patent number: 7616618
Abstract: An optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) system includes an optical transmitter system configured to transmit data from a plurality of users through a shared optical channel by encoding the data from each user with a spreading code assigned to that user. Each spreading code includes a unique sequence of T time chips along a time axis. The data from each user is representable by T symbols. The OCDMA system further includes an optical receiver system configured to demodulate the data from each user by correlating signals received from the transmitter system with the spreading code assigned to that user. When transmitting a data symbol for each user, the transmitter system selects one out of T distinct cyclic shifts of the spreading code assigned to that user, and transmits the selected cyclic shift of the assigned spreading code along the time axis.

  • Publication number: 20080263183
Abstract: Various approaches for managing kernel configuration files in a cluster computing arrangement are disclosed. In one approach, a first set of kernel configuration files are installed networked storage, and a first node is booted using the first set of kernel configuration files. A copy of the first set of kernel configuration files is stored in networked storage as a default kernel configuration in response to an administrator initiated first operation. In response to an administrator-initiated second operation a copy of the default kernel configuration is stored as a second set of kernel configuration files for a second node of the cluster. The second node is booted with the second set of kernel configuration files.

  • Patent number: 6950962
Abstract: A method for testing a service that provides interface functions having no user space interaction and that is runs in a kernel space of an operating system. The method includes loading into the kernel space a dynamically loadable kernel module (DLKM) containing a pseudo device driver having interface commands corresponding to the interface functions of the service to be tested, invoking the interface commands to exercise the interface functions to be tested, and unloading the DLKM module.

  • Patent number: 6912240
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for generating and apparatus for employing code families having desirable correlation properties. Regardless of code length, maximum autocorrelation of the codes is 4 for any nonzero offset and maximum cross-correlation of any two codes from a code family is 4 for any offset. The codes can be used in impulse radio systems and non-impulse radio systems including CDMA, TDMA, FDMA, OFDM and various other frequency hopping and direct sequence systems. The codes can be used to specify various impulse radio and non-impulse radio signal characteristics including pulse position in time, amplitude, width, type, phase, phase difference, frequency, spreading code, etc. The codes have the unique property that they can specify as many as two components in which a signal is not present. A method of code compression is provided.

  • Patent number: 5666370
Abstract: An improved error control coding scheme is implemented in low bit rate coders in order to improve their performance in the presence of transmission errors typical of the digital cellular channel. The error control coding scheme exploits the nonlinear block codes (NBCs) for purposes of tailoring those codes to a fading channel in order to provide superior error protection to the compressed half rate speech data. For a half rate speech codec assumed to have a frame size of 40 ms, the speech encoder puts out a fixed number of bits per 40 ms. These bits are divided into three distinct classes, referred to as Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 bits. A subset of the Class 1 bits are further protected by a CRC for error detection purposes. The Class 1 bits and the CRC bits are encoded by a rate 1/2 Nordstrom Robinson code with codeword length of 16. The Class 2 bits are encoded by a punctured version of the Nordstrom Robinson code. It has an effective rate of 8/14 with a codeword length 14.
