Sources of F.sup.- fluoride ions for use in the present invention include sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, strontium fluoride, indium fluoride, and amine fluorides.The present invention further relates to methods for treating or preventing diseases of the oral cavity in humans or lower animals with reduced staining of the teeth or dentures. These methods comprise topically applying to the oral surfaces of the human or lower animal a safe and effective amount of a composition of the present invention.
