    Abstract: A process for producing a fertilizer from an organic waste material is described which comprises treating a waste, having a water content of no more than 90% by weight and which has been alkalinized, with nitrogen dioxide or a precursor thereof in sufficient amount to reduce the pH by at least 2.0 pH units. The process produces an organic fertilizer in which the percentage by weight of nitrogen in the form of oxides of nitrogen is higher than percentage by weight of nitrogen in the form of ammonium ion.
