  • Patent number: 8874104
Abstract: A method and corresponding system for use of a femtocell in a vehicle (an “in-vehicle femtocell”) to help limit operation of a wireless communication device (WCD) positioned in the vehicle. In one implementation, registration (or registration attempts) of one or more WCDs with an in-vehicle femtocell may be used as a basis to trigger limitations on certain WCD functions in a vehicle, such as to prevent a WCD from providing text-messaging service for instance. In another implementation, a WCD may receive a signal from an in-vehicle femtocell and in response to the signal, the WCD may register with the femtocell to be served with wireless communication service by the femtocell. In addition to registering with the femtocell, the WCD may limit certain of its own functions while it is in the vehicle and being served with wireless communication service by the femtocell.

  • Patent number: 8818365
Abstract: A method, device, and system for re-routing an incoming call via a stronger serving system. When a wireless communication device such as a cell phone is receiving an incoming call via a first serving system with which it is registered, the device may detect that a second serving system (possibly a competing carrier's system) would provide improved signal strength. In response, the device may prompt its user to request the call be re-routed to the device via the other serving system. If the user approves, the device may then signal to the network to cause the call to be re-routed to the device, and the device may register with the new serving system. That way, as the network sets up the call to the device again, the call will extend via the new (improved signal strength) serving system to the device, thus reducing the likelihood of a call drop.

  • Patent number: 8755502
Abstract: A call contention manager mediates between call contentions that occur when two callers attempt to place a telephone call to one another at approximately the same time. The call contention manager may be implemented in or separate from a mobile switching center. The manager detects a call contention between two calls, and it determines whether the call contention is taking place in a window of time that follows shortly after at least one of the callers was involuntarily dropped from a call. If a call contention occurs within such a call drop window, it is resolved according to a post-drop protocol that enables a connection between the callers. If, however, the call contention occurs outside any call drop window, it is resolved without establishing a connection between the callers, for example by sending one or more of the contending calls to voicemail.

  • Patent number: 8750838
Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for reverse buffering a media content stream on a mobile device. The mobile device requests the media content from a host of the media content. The host streams the media content to the mobile communications device. The mobile communications device buffers the streaming media content and presents the streaming media content. The buffered media content is reverse buffered in a reverse buffer associated with the mobile communications device. The reverse buffered media content is accessible by other mobile communications devices that request the media content. The mobile communications device receives a request for the reverse buffered media content and streams the reverse buffered media content to the requesting device.

  • Publication number: 20140092721
Abstract: A Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) system controls an Internet Protocol (IP) communication session between a first communication device and a second communication device. A SIP control server receives a SIP bye message from the first communication device indicating a loss of the IP communication session, and in response, transfers a notification request for the second communication device to a SIP registration server. The SIP registration server processes a SIP registration message from the second communication device, and in response to the notification request and the SIP registration message, transfers a registration notification for the second communication device to the SIP control server. The SIP control server receives the registration notification for the second communication device, and in response, transfers a SIP invite message to re-establish the IP communication session to the first communication device.

  • Patent number: 8644218
Abstract: A call session control function (CSCF) controls a communication session between a first communication device and a second communication device. The first communication device detects a loss of signal and transmits a modified session initiation protocol (SIP) bye message. The modified SIP bye message includes a code that indicates a loss of the communication session and an identifier for the second communication device. The CSCF receives the modified SIP bye message and in response to the code, subscribes with a home subscriber server (HSS) for a registration notification for the second communication device. The second communication device subsequently transfers a SIP registration request and the CSCF responsively receives the registration notification for the second communication device from the HSS that indicates a network address for the second communication device.

  • Patent number: 8634819
Abstract: A wireless communication device has first processing circuitry and second processing circuitry that are separate from one another. The wireless communication device transfers first wireless communications to a wireless network using the first processing circuitry. The wireless communication device identifies a reboot condition for the first processing circuitry and responsively provides a geographic location of the wireless communication device to the second processing circuitry and displays a user interface for communications using the second processing circuitry. The wireless communication device reboots the first processing circuitry while the user interface for communications is displayed. The wireless communication device transfers second wireless communications to the wireless network using the second processing circuitry while rebooting the first processing circuitry.

  • Patent number: 8588394
Abstract: A method, medium, and content switch device are provided for enhanced directory assistance. A GPS-enabled wireless phone generates directory assistance requests that are monitored and processed by the content switch and a directory assistance platform to generate results that satisfy the directory assistance requests. The content switch intelligently monitors the directory assistance sessions and dynamically invokes value-adding services that delivers rich content in addition to the results to the GPS-enable wireless phone or other registered client devices based on the directory assistance requests or results. The value-adding services may include pushing driving directions to the GPS-enable wireless phone, providing training video content corresponding to vendors associated with the directory assistance requests, or connecting the GPS-enabled wireless phone to a live video-conferencing session.

  • Patent number: 8526360
Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for optimizing a stream of a media content through a wireless telecommunications network. A catalog receives a request from a mobile communication device for a particular media content. The catalog identifies that the media content is not available as reverse buffered media content. The request is then directed to a host of the media content where the host communicates the media to the mobile communications device. The media content is reverse buffered at a reverse buffer. The catalog updates to indicate that the media content is available as reverse buffered media content at the reverse buffer. The catalog receives a second request for the media content. The catalog determines that the media content is available and directs the request to the reverse buffer. The reverse buffered media content is communicated to the second mobile communication device.

  • Patent number: 8509417
Abstract: A first voice call is put in an on-hold state in response to a resource being unavailable. In response to putting the first voice call in the on-hold state, a first data communication is transferred for delivery to the communication device. The first data communication drives the communication device to display an offer for a media service. A second data communication transferred by the communication device is received indicating that the offer has been accepted. The first data communication drives the communication device, in response to the acceptance of the offer, to transfer the second data communication and to retrieve media from the media service. The first voice call is terminated in response to receiving the second data communication. A second voice call is established with the communication device in response to the resource becoming available.
