    Abstract: A method for generating a preamble sequence in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system having A subcarriers in a frequency domain. The method comprises generating a length -M×N preamble sequence, where M×N is less than A, by using a length-N Golay complementary sequence and a length-M Golay complementary sequence; and assigning elements constituting the preamble sequence to M×N subcarriers among the A subcarriers on a one-to-one mapping basis, assigning null data to the remaining subcarriers excluding the M×N subcarriers from the A subcarriers, and then IFFT-transforming the assigned result into time-domain data.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for allocating pilot carriers adaptively in an OFDMA communication system are disclosed. To improve phase error estimation performance and optimize the number of pilot carriers allocated to each sub-channel, an OFDMA transmitter changes the number of pilot carriers for a sub-channel according to the status of the sub-channel. Consequently, less pilot carriers are allocated to a sub-channel in a good state, reducing power consumption and more pilot carriers are allocated to a sub-channel in a bad state, improving channel estimation performance despite increased power consumption.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a power saving method for a wireless communication apparatus that operates in a sleep mode during a predetermined duration by exchanging Media Access Control (MAC) messages with a base station in order to reduce power consumption when there is no transmission/reception data. According to the power saving method, switching is made between the sleep mode and a normal mode by transmission data generated by an upper layer. In the power saving method, an active mode switching is performed by recognizing the start and end of data transmission/reception in the upper layer, thereby preventing unnecessary power consumption caused by a listening interval of a fixed length.

A sub-carrier selection and frequency mask unit maps a second number of ARM code components to a second number of sub-carriers among a third number of OFDM sub-carriers distributed equally in a frequency band and maps null components to sub-carriers excluding from the second number of sub-carriers. Here, the second number being the number of (the components of the ARM code) minus (a DC component and a first number of ARM code components set to prevent adjacent channel interference). Then, an IFFT generates a preamble sequence by inverse-fast-Fourier-transforming the sub-carriers received from the sub-carrier and frequency mask unit.

The method includes designating a start point of an asynchronous frame of the relay link by taking into account of a broadcast channel transmission interval of the direct link frame; and making a frame interval of the relay link null, where a transmission (Tx) mode of the direct link overlaps with another Tx mode. Accordingly, serving cell service coverage expansion and backward compatibility are achieved and a frame is constructed by selecting an optimum frame interval according to system information of the serving cell service. Accordingly, the BS can select a suitable RS for the MS by taking into account the RS-MS channel status.
