  • Patent number: 10384372
Abstract: Method for producing shaped polymeric microparticles of non-spherical shape, comprising the steps of: placing one or more microparticles of substantially spherical shape in a respective micro-cavity of a mold having the desired non-spherical shape; subjecting said microparticles to softening by exposure to a solvent or mixture of solvent/non-solvent, in the liquid or vapor state, adapted to plasticize the polymeric material constituting said microparticles, and possibly assisting the solvent plasticization process by heat treatment, not excluding the possibility, in less critical cases in terms of conservation of the microstructure, of carrying out heat treatment exclusively, at a temperature not exceeding 40% of the glass transition temperature of the polymer material; and removing said microparticles from the mold cavities.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: August 20, 2019
Assignee: Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia
Inventors: Raffaele Vecchione, Renato De Alteriis, Paolo Antonio Netti
  • Patent number: 9561355
Abstract: There is described a method for making an array of micro-needles, comprising the steps of: depositing a plurality of drops of a liquid substance comprising a polymer on a surface of a starting substrate; positioning a pyroelectric substrate at a certain distance from the starting substrate in such a way that the drops deposited are positioned between said surface of the starting substrate and a surface of the pyroelectric substrate; varying the temperature of the pyroelectric substrate or a part thereof to induce on said surface of the pyroelectric substrate a charge density such that starting from the drops deposited, under the effect of an electrodynamic force, respective cones are formed having a tip facing towards the pyroelectric substrate; determining a consolidation of the cones, to form said micro-needles, preventing the tip of said cones from contacting said surfaces of the pyroelectric substrate.

  • Patent number: 5645592
Abstract: Provided are orthopedic fasteners and replacements such as nails, screws, pins, hip and knee replacements, etc., coated with hydrogels and other biocompatible/biodegradable materials which expand in the presence of liquids. Swelling of such coatings causes the fastener or replacement to be securely fixed into position once inserted into bone material. Useful coating materials include methacrylates, hyaluronic acid esters, and crosslinked esters of hyaluronic acid resulting from the esterification of hyaluronic acid with polyhydric alcohols. Also provided is a method for fixing a bone or bone replacement in position employing such coated orthopedic fasteners or replacements.
