    Abstract: For mounting to the frame of a road vehicle, a railway wheel apparatus comprises an axle, a pair of flanged wheels mounted in spaced relation on the axle, a first pair of laterally spaced toggle structures pivotally connected at the lower ends thereof to the axle, a second pair of spaced toggle structures pivotally connected at one end thereof respectively to the upper ends of the first pair of toggle structures and pivotally connected at the other ends thereof to the frame, so that extension of said toggle structures into substantial alignment with each other effects a downward lowering of the axle and wheels and so that bodily angular movement of the toggle structures effects upward raising of the axle and wheels, and a pair of fluid motors for extending and retracting the toggle structures respectively whereby the wheels are lowered and raised relative to the vehicle frame.

    Abstract: Apparatus for the conversion of a vehicle from conventional road use to use on railroad tracks is provided and comprises a support arm attached to the vehicle frame at one end and to the vehicle suspension adjacent the axle at the other end, a base plate pivotally mounted on the support arm, a railway wheel axle with associated wheels secured to the base plate, a hydraulic cylinder operable to swing the railway wheel from a retracted position to an extended position and back, a securing notch formed in the base plate, a securing pin extending from the hydraulic cylinder through the base plate and being adapted to cooperate with the securing notch to maintain the railway wheel in the extended position, and a guide bar in the extended position engaging the inside sidewall of the vehicle highway tire to maintain straight ahead tire orientation.
